various organs and operations.
The endocrine glands, which
include the pineal, pituitary,
hypothalamus, thyroid, parathyroid,
adrenals, thymus, pancreas, ovaries,
and testes, function together to release
carefully measured amounts of
hormones into the bloodstream.
Hormones work as electrochemical
messengers and travel throughout the
body to balance and direct numerous
activities. These messengers are
responsible for many important events
and processes. The pineal gland, for
instance, produces melatonin, an
antioxidant that affects sleep, body
rhythms and emotional well-being.
Hormones can influence the function
of the immune system, instigate
maturation, regulate menstrual cycles
the breakdown of fat, and hair loss or
growth. In the womb, hormones
manage the chemicals necessary for
development.
Basically, they relate to every
functionof everyday life. Generally,
however, they are often thought of
only as they relate to the reproductive
system. In males the testes produce
sperm and secrete the male sex
hormone testosterone; and in females,
the ovaries produce eggs and the
female hormone estrogen. It is

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
by Sibylle Preuschat
The summer of 2002 brought
disturbing news to many women and
their doctors. The scientists conducting
the Women’s Health Initiatives (WHI)
study, a clinical trial of hormone
replacement therapy (HRT) involving
more than 16,000 women, stopped
their research on combined estrogen

this commonly prescribed HRT
combination significantly increased a woman’s risk of heart attack,
stroke, blood clots, and invasive breast cancer. The WHI study is
far from being the first to find that pharmaceutical hormones can
seriously undermine a woman’s health.
Yet, HRT has been the medical profession’s most common
answer to the challenges many women face during the menopausal
years: hot flashes, insomnia and night sweats, fuzzy thinking, and
memory lapses. HRT has also been thought to combat more
serious health concerns that crop up during this time of life: heart
disease and osteoporosis. There’s no doubt that all of these
hrt cont’d on p19
What are hormones and how do they work?
Hormones are “messenger” molecules released by endocrine
glands—the adrenals, hypothalamus, pancreas, parathyroids, pineal,
pituitary, ovaries, testes, thymus, and thyroid. Hormones help the
body function properly by changing the physiological activities of
cells. In a healthy person, there is no over or underproduction of the
hormones needed. However, before, during and after menopause
many women experience hormone deficiencies or excesses.
What are the female hormones?
A number of hormones are needed to help women menstruate,
conceive, bear, and nurture children, and to remain healthy after
menstrual cycles end—the menopause. Important hormones in
menstrual and menopausal health include estrogens, progesterone,
luteinizing hormone, and follicle stimulating hormone. Due to
environmental pollution and stress, many women today have
“estrogen dominance.” That is, their estrogen levels are too high
relative to progesterone levels. This situation aggravates menstrual
and menopausal symptoms.

HARMONY
It seems that time passes more quickly
some years than others. Wasn’t it just
yesterday that the snow was falling and
holiday festivities had me running from week to week? When I look
back on last year (and then the years before that), I am flooded with
a mix of emotions and memories. A tapestry of time woven with
hopes and dreams, heartbreaks and disappointments looks so
wonderful from where I stand today. Who would I be if that
tapestry were any different?
Lately, I feel the phrase “if only I knew then, what I know now”
could be my theme song. I often have to fight the urge to look at my
day with a critical eye. Some moments, all I see is what I did not
accomplish and what went other than I had planned. Rarely, but on
occassion, this spirals into lamenting the fact that I could have spent
my days more wisely, could have taken steps to be be healthier, and
so on. Then, by prayer, meditation, or serendipity, I am pulled back
to my center. Isn’t wisdom the bounty we reap from all of our
experiences- good and bad?
The articles in this issue again remind me to count my blessings, to
set my priorities, to love my body (despite its shortcomings) and
cherish the life it allows me. None of us are getting any younger and
the up side is that we are presented with challenges that will make
us wiser- if we choose to let them. Judgement and criticism are
survival skills. They can also do us and others harm. The ability to
choose happiness, grace and forgiveness boosts our life from one of
survival skills to one of harmony.
You, our readers, are very important to me. As always, I wish you all
the best. May all your days bring you many delights and harmony!
Blessings,
Selina
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that
we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that
most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented and fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You
are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There
is nothing enlightened about shrinking yourself so other people will not
feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. As
we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our
presence automatically liberates others.

DIET/MENTAL HEALTH
COCONUT WATER
Do you have any information
on diet and schizophrenia?
-via email
One of our new favorites! This
coconut water has proven to
be a real find. Donna Gates
recommends it to promote
intestinal healing and many
other folks have reported
positive results for rehydration
(and it’s great mixed with black
currant juice). There is no
recommended daily amount.
The only concern anyone may
have is that it is high in
minerals- especially potassium,
so the minority of people on a
mineral-restricted diet, will
want to check with their
doctor.
While the many roles that diet
play in mental and physical
health cannot be adequately
addressed here, it is important
to understand that the
foundation for both physical
and mental health is solid
nutritional support. This is
supplied by the Daily Energy
Enfusion Powder by Enzymatic
Therapy (1 good tasting drink
and 1 capsule replaces 25-35
supplement tablets a day). In
addition, wheat and milk food
allergies can play a major role
in perpetuating schizophrenia.
Fish oils can help many mood
disorders including depression,
and is one of the few needed
nutrients not in the powder
formula (oil and water don't
mix). Most fish oils are rancid,
which is why you burp them up
all day. I recommend only high
quality fish oils.

POINT OF VIEW- G&SS Forum
CLoWNING AROUNd
by G&SS employee, David “Toodles” Swing
I was born with an over-developed funny
bone. It was most likely in self defense to
keep the doctor from slapping me in the
delivery room. I mean how can he slap my
little newborn bottom when he’s got tears
pouring out of his eyes from laughing so
hard!
There was an Egyptian Pharaoh who
referred to clowns as a “divine wind”. I
would like to think that this ancient leader
had a sense of humor, or maybe he had a
thing for funny people with a flatulence
problem.
It is better to have a sense of humor while
traveling along the hopefully, long road of
life. Especially when you accidentally
tumble into one of those large sneaky
potholes that seem to come out of
nowhere.
A couple of years before I heard of the
wonderful Dr. Patch Adams, I entered
nursing school (which is sort of like boot
camp in the Army, but much worse! I think
my Drill Sergeants were more warm and
fuzzy than my nursing instructors).
One of my assignments was on the
Cancer Ward, which as you can guess, was
not the most cheerful working
environment.
I had a patient who was an older woman,
and according to the doctors, did not have
long to live. She spent most of her time
alone in her darkened room, sobbing
quietly to herself, while waiting for Death
to visit her.
Her family loved her, and tried
desperately to console her, but she had
given up. For, so dark was her path before
her, she just couldn’t respond to their love.
She also wouldn’t eat, nor communicate
much with the medical staff of the hospital.
You see, she wasn’t afraid of death. She
was afraid of dying in the hospital. She
wanted to be at home when she died. In
her own bedroom, with her own things,
and among her family and friends.
Before I entered Nursing School, I made
my living as a professional clown, so per
my duties I administrated care to her in a
professional manner, but I also brought my
clowning experience into our interactions .
Like Dr. Patch Adams, I too proudly
donned a bedpan hat and my red clown
nose. I told jokes, made up silly songs, did
little Can Can dances about the room.
Sadly, I was discovered by the Head
Nurse who was of the strong opinion that
skills of nursing and clowning did not go
together. Needless to say I did get in a bit
of trouble.
After my clown bust by the Head Nurse,
I still secretly acted the clown with this
patient, and at the same time provided her
excellent medical care.
When her family would arrive for a visit
she would always introduce me as her
“clown nurse”. She would then expect me
to do something clown-like for her family’s
entertainment. I would comply, which
would get the patient and her family
laughing together.
After about a week, my patient became
very cheerful and responded well to her
family visits. Her crying spells ceased and
her appetite picked up. The doctor and the
other nurses noticed the positive about face
of her attitude, and per my patient’s
wish she was on her way home.
Like my patient, we are all born

important to recognize that these hormones
also determine many other characteristics
such as muscle mass and facial hair, as well as
managing sperm production, menstruation
and pregnancy.
As we age, or in some cases, as we are
exposed to certain chemicals, the endocrine
glands may shrink in size and their functions
become less responsive, less accurate. By the
age of seventy, we produce only a fraction of
the hormones when we were younger.
Compromised hormone activity has been
linked to sleep disorders, diabetes, heart
disease, skin cancer, weight gain, yeast
infections, impotence and more.
Hormone levels vary and can be
influenced by factors such as stress,
infection, and changes in the balance of fluid
and minerals in blood. Reduced levels of
hormones are linked to heart disease, lupus,
skin cancer, diabetes and more. Dr Hans
Seyle’s studies showed that under stress your
hormonal system becomes exhausted,
resulting in the first stages of degenerative
diseases. (See our Winter 2003 newsletter for
more information on adrenal exhaustion)
For improved health, boost your hormone
system with regular exercise, quality sleep,
elimination of toxins, healthy vegetables,
grains and fats.

Culture Delivered...
Right to Your Door
Selina interviews Caldwell Bio Fermentation
about their packaged cultured vegetables.
Selina: I have been eating cultured
vegetables for years for their many health
benefits. I love your Caldwell Raw
Cultured Vegetables. They have a better
and more consistent taste than any I have
ever made. For those who don’t always
have the time and resources to make their
own, what is your secret? What makes
your products special?
CBFC, Inc.: Our product is a homemade
product, we make it by hand. The “secret” is
that we use a starter culture which is a mix
of specific strains of compatible lactic acid
bacteria that create a highly-responsive and
stable fermentation. We are able to create a
superior product in days rather than weeks.
We produce raw cultured vegetables with a
highly stable shelf life, more lactic acid
bacteria, exceptional nutritional quality and
a sweet taste.(To get same amount of lactic
acid bacteria in 3.5 ounces of our vegetables,
you would need to eat five 8 ounce servings of
yogurt).
Our strains of lactic acid bacteria were
carefully chosen from over 30 pure and
mixed cultures based on their fermentation
profiles and biocompatibility. We have a
bank of strains that we are consistently
adding to and that we rely upon. The strains
we choose determine the effectiveness of our
starters. There is tremendous potential
across a wide range of applications for lactic
acid fermentation technology We can create
"designer starters" for many purposes.
Selina: What role does salt play in
fermentation?
CBFC, Inc.: There are three major roles for
salt. The first one is crucial because lactic
acid fermentation requires an anaerobic
medium. So, first and most importantly, salt
creates an anaerobic medium by osmosis,
whereby the contents of the vegetable cell
including the water, are drawn out. Second,
salt is used to assist lactic acid bacteria to
take control over other bacteria, yeasts and
molds naturally present on fresh vegetables.
Thirdly, salt inhibits pectinase in the
vegetable thereby blocking the degradation
of pectin. Pectin maintains a pleasant, fresh,
crunchiness to the vegetables.
Selina: Why did you choose to use Celtic
Sea Salt® in your production?
CBFC, Inc.: We choose Celtic Sea Salt®
because we are always striving to improve
our products. We use Celtic Sea Salt®
because of the ideal way in which it is
harvested and for its abundant mineral
content. It is both the finest quality salt and
the best tasting salt that we have ever tasted.
Selina: What would happen if you didn't
use salt in fermentation?
CBFC, Inc.: The answer is simple. If you do
not use salt in vegetable fermentation, it is
the same as not using lactic acid bacteria.
Salt is an essential part of this ancestral
method of conservation.
Selina: Your vegetables are frozen and
shipped in a cooler. What happens when
the product is frozen and thawed? Is there
any loss or damage to the lactic bacteria?
Would you recommend refreezing them?
CBFC, Inc.: Our studies show that our fastfreezing process and/or refreezing does not
affect lactic acid bacteria levels. Actually, this
process maintains all of the various qualities
of the vegetables in terms of vitamins and
other chemical compounds. The refrigerated
shelf-life of our vacuum-packed bags is six
months. Exposure to light over a 6 month
period merely degrades the vitamin C, but
there is no loss to the lactic acid bacteria and
enzymes. When the package is opened and
oxygen enters, then shelf-life is reduced. The
vegetables are good to eat for one month
after opening when tightly wrapped and
stored in order to keep the oxygen out. An
unopened package can be kept for up to 2
years if it is frozen. Refreezing the product at
-4°F is recommended and will not degrade
the product in any way.
If you have questions concerning lactic acid
fermentation please direct your inquiries to The
Grain & Salt Society, ph: 800.867.7258. Email: [email protected]. Questions will
be answered by CBFC, Inc. in future issues. See
our Spring 2003 newsletter for more info.
DIGEST THIS...
Lactic acid bacteria is recommended for
persons with digestive challenges like IBS,
leaky gut, peptic ulcers, bloating and
heartburn, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s
disease, constipation or diarrhea, as well as
persons suffering from yeast infections
including Candida albicans. It also
counteracts damage from antibiotics or
detox products, which strip the colon of
the “good” bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria
and bifidobacteria are known to inhibit
pathogens and control intestinal pH. As
we age, digestion and colon function
degrades. Cultured vegetables and
fermented foods supply lactic acid bacteria
that could effectively prevent constipation
and diarrhea caused by lactose
intolerance, poor digestion or “bad”
bacteria.

Think Outside the Box - and the Jar
Organic? Homemade? Why bother?
The health effects of chronic low level exposure to pesticide
residues are still unknown.
Whole, unprocessed foods that you make yourself are healthiest for
your child. Infants grow and develop faster than at any other period in
their lives. At a time when nutrition is so important, many babies are
being fed almost exclusively from boxes and jars. Over-processed
foods containing chemicals, preservatives, sugar, sodium, pesticide
residue, and genetically engineered ingredients (GMOs) cannot
nourish a growing child.
Homemade baby food is nutritious, inexpensive, and easy to make.
Cooked fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes can be mashed in
a blender, food processor, or baby food grinder. In fact, the Happy Baby
Food Grinder can be used right at the table. Just take an unseasoned
portion of what you are eating, place it in the grinder, and turn the
handle. Instant baby food!
Feed your children organically-grown food whenever possible.
Infants are especially vulnerable to the effects of pesticides. Babies
experience rapid growth in a short period of time, and their brain and
immune systems are immature. Safe dosage levels of pesticides are
calculated based on adult tolerance, not children's. Crops are often
treated with more than one chemical. The effects of these combinations
are usually untested. Pesticides are designed to kill insects or make them
sterile so they can't reproduce. What effect might they have on your
growing child?
Commercially grown soybeans, most grains, and some fruits and
vegetables are now genetically modified, and the list continues to grow.
Products containing GMOs are not required to divulge that
information on their labels. Buy organic to ensure your food is GMOfree.
Obesity, diabetes, and learning disorders are rampant in today's kids.
CNN.com recently published a study stating that many toddlers in the
United States are obese. Children become addicted to the artificially
colored and overly sugared foods marketed for kids. Start your infant
with fresh, organic fare rather than machine-prepared foods that may
have been sitting on a shelf for months or years. They will grow up
appreciating the colors and flavors of fresh produce, whole grains and
legumes, rather than craving the sugar and salt found in processed
foods.
If we start our children eating right, they will establish good eating
habits that will last a lifetime. They may go off on tangents when they
will eat junk or fast food, but they will always come back to the diet
they were raised on. Many of us who grew up eating sugary, processed
foods know how hard it is to unlearn habits we established as
youngsters. By introducing your children to whole foods as infants, you
are starting them on the road to lifelong health.

HOMEMADE BABY CEREALS
Rice cereal is typically the first solid food given to infants, but millet,
quinoa, and barley are also good grain choices. Homemade cereal
is less processed and fresher than packaged cereal. To save time,
prepare enough for several feedings.
WHOLE GRAIN INFANT CEREAL
In a dry skillet over medium heat, lightly toast 1 to 2 cups organic
brown rice, millet, quinoa, or barley for 5 to10 minutes, stirring
occasionally. Remove from heat when grains begin to pop. This
makes enough for several servings. To keep for later use, cool grains
completely and store in a covered jar.
To serve: Grind desired amount of toasted grain (about 2 or 3
tablespoons for an infant) to fine powder in a grinder or blender.
In a saucepan, whisk together 1 part cereal powder and 6 parts
water. Bring to a boil, and simmer uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes,
or until soft and smooth. Add extra water if necessary.
Variation: The rest of the family can enjoy this cereal too. It tastes
similar to Cream of Wheat, only better! Use 1 part cereal to 4
parts water. Cook 15 to 20 minutes.
BABY OATMEAL
Place 1 to 2 cups rolled oats in blender, food processor or grinder.
Grind to fine powder. Store in covered jar.
To serve: Whisk together 1 part oat powder and 3 parts water.
Bring to a boil and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, or until soft
and smooth. Add more water if cereal is too thick.
READ THE LABELS
Babies' bodies are much more vulnerable to pesticides because
their brains, immune and detoxification systems are immature and
in a state of development.
by Cathe Olson,
author of Simply Natural Baby Food Cookbook
Monosodium Glutamate is often added to prepared foods (as
well as baby food) to enhance flavor. Foods containing MSG
are not always marked clearly. It can be listed as hydrolyzed
vegetable protein, caseinate, autolyzed yeast or yeast extract,
beef or chicken broth, or natural flavoring. Glutamate,
aspartate, and cytesine are naturally occurring amino acids
which serve as nuerotransmitters, but in excess they are
considered “excitotoxins,” substances that drive neurons to
literally over-excite and become permanently damaged. They
can have neurologic effects in children such as dyslexia, autism,
schizophrenia, seizures, and cerebral palsy. In adults they have
been linked to strokes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s
and brain cancer.
Some soft plastics used in baby toys and detergents contain
phthalates, which have been suspected of acting as “endocrine
disrupters” (disrupting hormones during development).

According to a recent study in the Journal of the
American Medical Association (Vol. 289 No. 14, April 9,
2003), one in seven children are obese. Obese children
rated their quality of life with scores as low as those of
young cancer patients on chemotherapy.
P-BABY
Obesity in children has become a serious problem in
this country.Almost 9 million young Americans -- over
15 percent of all children -- are overweight. Over 10
percent of younger preschool children between ages 2
and 5 are overweight, up from 7 percent in 1994.
Obesity can cause medical complications that can lead
to hospitalization for type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and
asthma. Also excessive sugar in the diet taxes the
systems and functions necessary for healthy
development and learning.
A growing number of children and adolescents are
developing type 2 diabetes - a form of diabetes that is
generally diagnosed among adults. As many as 80%
may be overweight at the time of diagnosis. Since type
2 diabetes in children and adolescents is a relatively
new phenomenon, accurate statistics regarding the
number of cases have not been generated. However,
recent reports indicate up to 45% of children with
newly-diagnosed diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

rates have increased rapidly over the past several
decades.
Nearly 17% of children under 18 have been diagnosed
with at least one developmental disorder.
Between 3-5% of children in the US have Attention
Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the
incidence may be on the rise. Visits to office-based
physicians for pediatric ADHD-related concerns
increased by 90% between 1989 and 1996.The use of
stimulants such as Ritalin to treat ADHD in children
rose 14% during this same period.

SWEETDREAMS
Do you:
Wake up periodically
and have trouble getting back to sleep?
Drag yourself out of bed with difficulty?
Regularly hit the snooze button?
Find it hard to keep your eyes open in
meetings, while reading or when watching
TV?
Toss and turn for more than an hour
before falling asleep?
If you answered “yes” to more than one
of these questions, you could be sleep-deprived.
The consequences might be more serious than
you imagine.
Some experts believe sleep gives neurons,
used while we are awake, a chance to shut
down and repair themselves. Without sleep,
neurons may become so depleted or polluted
with by-products of normal cellular activities
that they begin to malfunction. While we may
think that we get used to a sleep-deprived
schedule, judgment, reaction time and other
functions are impaired. Truth is, we never
really adapt to getting less sleep than we need.
Sleep-deprived people tested in driving
simulators or coordination tasks perform as
badly as, or worse than, intoxicated
respondents. According to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver
fatigue is responsible for an estimated 100,000
motor vehicle accidents and 1500 deaths each
year.
While anyone who has suffered insomnia
(characterized either by an inability to fall asleep
or to remain asleep) or who has been burning
the candles at both ends can attest, the feelings
of fatigue can be immediate and debilitating.
Chronic sleep deprivation can actually speed
the aging processes and suppress the immune
system.
Sleep and sleep-related problems play a part in
many health conditions. For example,
problems like stroke and asthma attacks tend
to occur more frequently during the night and
early morning, perhaps due to changes in
hormones, heart rate, and other changes that
occur during sleep. Deep sleep coincides with
the release of growth hormone in children and
young adults. Many of the body’s cells show
increased production and reduced breakdown
of proteins during deep sleep.
8
by Elizabeth Ward
Our need for, and ability to obtain, quality
sleep changes as we age. Young adults spend
some 25% of their sleep time in deep sleep.
Adults aged fifty to sixty spend 10% or less of
their sleep time sleeping deeply. This reduced
deep sleep is bothersome as it may be normal
or it could be insomnia. If you’re having
trouble sleeping more than three times per
week you may be suffering from insomnia.
Many of the causes of sleeplessness, however,
are due to activities and choices made during
the day. Insomnia may have many causes, but
the usual suspects are:
Hormones Melatonin, a neurohormone
helps manage sleep cycles. Night sweats are a
common indicator of hormonal imbalance.
Chronic Stress Adrenal exhaustion, most
often caused by stress, suppresses levels of
DHEA, a vital regulator of sleep. See our
Winter 2003 issue for more info on adrenal
exhaustion which can cause lower levels of
melatonin and/or DHEA, hormones that
promote sleep.
Diet/Chemicals A diet high in caffeine,
alcohol or sugar and low in certain nutrients
may alone be the culprit. Many studies now
show that food intolerances can be a major
contributor to sleeplessness. See our Spring
2003 issue for more info on food allergies and
sensitivities. Wheat, dairy, corn and chocolate are
the most common triggers.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS, NOT SHEEP
Create a clean peaceful place- keep your sleep
space calm by reducing clutter. Eliminate dust
mites and chemicals to reduce allergies. (see p
18). Be careful to only use quality aromatherapy
products, as some release toxins.
Remove the temptation to watch television.
Choose happiness. Schedule your days
reasonably. Unreasonable expectations are the
root of many frustrations.Think happy, positive
thoughts. Relaxation exercises, yoga, and
meditation are very good tools to help your
body and mind relax. Just fifteen minutes of any
of these exercises dramatically improves sleep.
Don’t do strenuous exercise less than four
hours before bedtime.
Don’t nap during the day.
Choose foods that promote sleep. (see list on
following page)
Lavender is a natural sleep aid. Soak in a warm
bath with a few drops of lavender oil, and place
a lavender sachet under your pillow.
Most people shouldn’t eat dinner less than
three hours before bedtime. Especially highcarbohydrate meals, caffeine or alcohol. Some
people, however, may need to eat to avoid
nocturnal hypoglycemia (low nighttime blood
glucose level) which can cause insomnia.
Bedtime snacks to keep blood sugar levels
steady throughout the night are oatmeal and
other whole grain cereals, whole grain breads,
and other complex carbohydrates. These
foods will not only help maintain blood sugar
levels, they actually can help promote sleep by
increasing the level of serotonin within the
brain.
O sleep! O gentle sleep!
Nature’s soft nurse, how have I frighted thee,
That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down,
And steep my senses in forgetfulness?

THE SWEET TASTE OF VICTORY
If someone told you there was an all-natural substance that was as sweet as sugar but was
actually good for you, would you believe them? It is true. Xylitol is a natural substance, produced
by your body during normal glucose metabolism. It is found in nature in many plants. No other
sugar alternative (aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, etc) offers the benefits without the risks.
Xylitol tastes as sweet as sugar and is lower in calories and carbohydrates than sugar, and also
scores lower (7) on the glycemic index. (Glycemic index is used to rate how quickly foods affect
blood sugar. Table sugar rates 110.)
Studies showing the dangers of diets high in sugar are continuing to mount. For
example, high-sugar diets can contribute to more than obesity:
•Hormone related cancers (high insulin levels raise estrogen hormones in the blood)
•Hypoglycemia, which can lead to diabetes
•Autoimmune/immune deficiency disorders, such as arthritis, allergies and asthma
•Elevated triglycerides and LDLs, which can lead to heart disease
•Tooth decay, Osteoporosis, and more.
•Compromised mental function (Attention deficit, alzheimer's, etc)
Not only does xylitol benefit people of all ages by replacing sugar, it is also one of
bacteria’s natural enemies. In particular, xylitol is effective in fighting yeast (Candida
albicans), infections in the mouth and nasal passage and ear infections. It’s role as a
precursor to antioxidants is also being studied.
FIGHT DISEASE-CAUSING GERMS
The Center for Disease Control has stated
that, "Hand washing is the most effective way
of reducing communicable disease." We wash
our hands to clean them and we are also
cautioned to keep our hands away from our
mouth and nose, because most infectioncausing bacteria enter the body through the
mouth and nose and thrive in the nasal
passages.
THE XYLITOL -DENTAL CONNECTION
Xylitol inhibits plaque by 80% to protect the
enamel, thus reducing cavities. In fact, it
promotes the remineralization of the enamel
by binding with calcium. The antibacterial
properties of xylitol help reduce gum disease
and mouth infections. Chewing xylitol gum
regularly promotes an alkaline environment in
which the damaging and acidic bacteria
responsible for tooth decay cannot survive.
IS NASAL WASH SAFE?
Xylitol is a remarkable substance. It is all
natural and is non habit-forming. The World
Health Organization and the FDA have given
xylitol their safest ratings for food additives.
Babies and small children can use it without
restriction. In fact, it is recommended that
children in day care or those exposed to
infectious bacteria should use Xlear Nasal
Wash 3-4 times a day.
REFRESHING
Xylitol relieves dry mouth and has a proteinstabilizing effect that improves breath odor.
All-in-all, it’s taste and properties make it a
great between-meal snack.
XLEAR NASAL WASH
Sleep better, feel better, and avoid colds.
Xlear Nasal Wash combines the healing
properties of xylitol with safe, healing saline
nasal spray to help wash, hydrate, and
moisturize the nasal passages. Great for ear

SPELT LICORICETHE DYNAMIC DUO
FOOD for the BRAIN
WHAT AM I?
I am found in some cereals, breads, cookies,
snacks, waffles, pancakes, bread mixes, baked
goods, and prepared and frozen meals.
Research shows that those with wheat or
gluten sensitivities are less sensitive to me.
I am one of the first grains to be grown by
early farmers as long ago as 5,000 BC.
newsletter for more information. We sell spelt
berries and flakes as well as spelt snack sticks,
cookies and crackers.
ANSWER: Spelt
Spelt's "nutty" flavor has long been popular
in Europe, where it is also known as "Farro"
(Italy) and "Dinkle" (Germany). In Roman
times it was "Farrum", and origins can be
traced back early Mesopotamia. Spelt
(Triticum spelta) is a ancient and distant
cousin to modern wheat (Triticum
aestivum). Spelt is one of the oldest of
cultivated grains, preceded only by Emmer
and Elkorn.
Those with severe allergies should always seek the
advice of a physician.
The grain is naturally high in fiber, and
contain significantly more protein than
wheat. Spelt is also higher in B complex
vitamins, and both simple and complex
carbohydrates.
The manufacturing obstacles that brought
the decline of spelt production in North
America are now recognized as benefits. The
tough husk makes spelt more laborious to
process than that of wheat. Yet, this husk
protects the kernel and helps retain spelt’s
nutrients and maintain freshness. As well,
spelt's husk protects it from pollutants and
insects and allows growers to avoid using
pesticides.
Modern wheat has been bred to optimize
growth harvest, yield and to have a high
gluten content for the production of highvolume commercial baked goods. Unlike
wheat, spelt has retained many of its original
traits and remains highly nutritious and full
of flavor. A growing number of people are
being diagnosed as gluten-sensitive. These
sensitivities contribute to other allergies,
asthma, a compromised immune system,
insomnia and more. See our Spring 2003
Flour made from the versatile grain can be
substituted for wheat flour in breads, pasta,
baked goods, pancakes and waffles.

Ancient texts describe licorice as the "elixir
of life." Recent research strongly suggests
that these health claims may be true. In
fact, a German study announced a few
weeks ago that the glycyrrhizin in licorice
may be effective against SARS. Licorice has
been used by manythroughout the ages to:
boost the immune system (by supporting
the liver and pancreas), to strengthen the
respiratory system, and to aid digestion,
combat ulcers and tooth decay and to
relieve pain naturally. Licorice Root extract
also stimulates the endocrine system and
production of various hormones. It is
truly a great snack for all.
The antiviral and healing properties
paired with spelt make this licorice
especially great for those with wheat or
gluten sensitivities. (See our Spring 2003
newsletter for more information)
Various historians place the age of Spelt
to be between 5,000 years and 9,000 years
as its origin. Some feel that the references
in The Bible to grains back at the time of
the Exodus is actually regarding the grain
Spelt and not modern day wheat. Spelt
contains a higher percentage of protein
than wheat, it also higher in B complex
vitamins, and both simple and complex
carbohydrates. Spelt is by nature a whole
food. Unlike wheat, where vital nutritional
bran and germ are often removed during
milling, the spelt kernel carries ALL the
vital nutritional components through the
milling process.

Dry Vapor
S T E A M
CLEANER
“Men will spend their health getting
wealth; then gladly pay all they have
earned to get health back.”
- Mike Murdock
God’s Little Instruction Book for Men
Dry Steam Vapor is the fastest,
most effective, 100% environmentally
safe method of cleaning
available. Eliminate mops, buckets
and toxic chemicals.
Sanitize, clean and deodorize in one
simple operation using only tap
water!Surfaces dry in seconds. The
pressurized high temperature dry vapor
penetrates deep down into materials
and surfaces. Steam temperatures of
285°F will destroy germs, viruses, dust
mites, molds and bacteria.
Allergy sufferers benefit greatly by using
a dry steam vapor system to clean their
home. Chemical fumes, dust mites, and
animal dander all cause sneezing, watery
eyes and other allergy symptoms.
Removing these has been difficult to
almost impossible until now. Using
steam vapor, you can quickly and easily
kill dust mites, remove allergens, and
remove residue from previous cleaners.
Individuals with compromised immune
systems will also benefit from using dry
steam vapor. Not only can you avoid
common irritants such as chemicals,
dust mites and the like, but you will also
have a sanitary indoor environment.
Dry steam vapor kills bacteria and
viruses. Reduce your exposure to germs
of all kinds and maintain a sparkling
clean home at the same time. Protect
yourself and stay healthy!

What is a Vapor Steam Cleaning system? A
vapor system looks like a vacuum but it is more
versatile. It is not a conventional "steam" cleaner
or a pressure washer.
What is "Dry Steam Vapor”? A low-moisture
vapor produced at a high temperature. The vapor
contains only 5% to 6% water. This cleaner
produces thousands of gallons of dry steam using
only about 1.5 quarts of water per hour. Other
products sold as steam cleaners use much more
water, at a much lower temperature which leaves
surfaces wet and only partially clean. Tidy Vap
leaves no mess and uses temperatures hot enough
to kill bacteria and germs, and emulsify grease
and oil.
How do I use it? This appliance comes with a
variety of accessories creating a system that can
be used on an unlimited number of applications.
The process eliminates dirt and residues, while
sanitizing the surface being treated. The vapor
system is quiet and portable, allowing for use
anytime and anywhere. The system is practical
for any surface that is not extremely heat
sensitive. Surfaces such as silks, some very thin
plastics, and some types of velour upholstery must be
treated with great care. Not only does this system
use NO SOAPS or CHEMICALS, it also
removes residue of previous cleaners.

CONNOIRSEUR

Is this system effective against DUST MITES?
YES!!! Generally, to treat for dust mites, items
must be laundered in water at least 130° F or
treated with a tannic acid solution. This is
impractical for carpets, furniture, mattresses, and
most clothes. Vapor steam, unlike other cleaning
or pest control methods, uses heat, not chemicals
or poisons, to do the work. The heat kills the
mites without saturating the surface and
contributing to mildew. Articles are completely
dry in a matter of minutes, not hours. In sensitive
cases, we recommend vacuuming after treating a
surface with a HEPA vacuum to completely remove
any allergens. Fleas, flea eggs and larvae are also
killed by the heat. The fine vapor reaches into
folds and fibers.
Is continuous refill and tank capacity really
important? YES! If you have a continuous refill
machine you do not have to wait for the machine
to cool down and heat up again when you want
to refill it. Many systems require 10 - 20 minutes
between refills. Be careful of lower cost models,
reconditioned or rebuilt units and cheap
imitations! ALL Steam Cleaners are NOT the
same. Your Dry Vapor Steam Cleaner should
provide: at least 55 PSI; a boiler temperature of
at least 280°F; and be a “continuous refill”
system.

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
When hormones are deficient, HRT
seeks to replace them. HRT most
commonly involves the use of artificial
hormones that have been altered from
the natural pattern so a pharmaceutical
company can patent them and profit
from their sale. Altered hormones are
associated with a high risk of side
effects and environmental pollution.
HRT may also be done with safer,
bioidentical hormones.
symptoms and conditions are influenced
by the levels and proportions of a woman’s
hormones, and that every woman’s
hormone profile goes through distinct
changes during the perimenopausal and
menopausal years. But there is now
growing doubt in many women’s (and
doctor’s) minds that HRT is the best way
to handle the hormonal challenges posed
by menopause.
At the same time, suffering through
years of insomnia and hot flashes is
understandably unacceptable to most
women. Neither do women want to leave
the risk of more serious disease
unaddressed. So the question becomes, can
women achieve good health during the
mid-life years without resorting to drugs?
Sherrill Sellman, Tulsa, Oklahoma-based
author of the bestselling Hormone Heresy:
What Women Must Know About Their
Hormones says yes, very emphatically:
“There are cultures around the world that
do not suffer from symptoms of hormone
imbalance at menopause. We are not
designed to suffer as women.”
Naturally, the next question that arises is
“How? How can one avoid the health
difficulties that so commonly accompany
the menopausal transition?”
An Attitudinal Shift
All healing begins with a shift in our
thinking. We need new perspectives and
ideas to bring about change. Sellman
points out that because in North America
we see premenstrual, menstrual, and
menopausal symptoms as inevitable,
almost normal, “We really have learned to
hate our bodies, and hate our female
functions.” Clearly, hatred is not an
emotional climate in which positive change
can occur.

been sitting in the sun or a hot car. Adds Vanderhaeghe, “Eat tons
of broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, these vegetables
contain nutrients that help keep our hormones balanced and
eliminate toxic xenoestrogens.” Another simple detoxifying strategy,
she says, is to take a 30-minute walk every day—this simple activity
reduces a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 30 percent.
According to World Wildlife Fund Canada, hormone disrupting
chemicals are found in PVC vinyl window shades and some
household cleaners. The agency also says that heavy metals such as
lead and cadmium interfere with hormone balance. Stick to natural
materials in your home, and use safe cleaning agents such as vinegar
and baking soda. To reduce your exposure to heavy metals, don’t
smoke, and avoid or replace mercury amalgam dental fillings. And
of course, don’t spray your lawn. If dandelions sprout, you might
consider eating them instead of poisoning them. They’re highly
supportive to the liver, a key player in hormone balance.
The Inner Ecosystem
When you’re doing all you can to reduce your exposure to
pollutants, the next step towards hormone balance is to care for the
organs that help you achieve it: the adrenals, the liver, and the colon.
The adrenal glands are first on the list because around menopause
they take over some of the hormone production that was once
handled by the ovaries. Explains Karen Jensen, Vancouver-based
naturopathic doctor and co-author of No More HRT: (see p2)
“Adrenal health is the foundation of all hormonal health. The
thyroid will go off and end up in the hypo range, usually based on
adrenal health. The adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary work together
[note that the thyroid and pituitary are also players in
reproductive/hormonal health]. If I support the adrenals, unless it’s
a clinical thyroid problem, the thyroid recovers as the adrenals
recover.”
Stress management is crucial for adrenal health, explains

Jensen: “We won’t get rid of stress. It’s a matter of learning to say
no, to take time for ourselves. Women don’t do that, they put
themselves last. Ink yourself into your calendar at least three
times a week. If someone calls, say you have an appointment.
Find the balance for yourself, whether it’s meditation, yoga, or
whatever pulls you back into your own center.” In her book,
Jensen also notes that new research indicates chronic,
uncontrolled stress is a primary factor in the development of
osteoporosis, and increases breast cancer risk as well.
Donna Gates, Atlanta, Georgia-based nutritionist and author
adds that it’s important to be “grateful for everything. Given where
our world is, we can’t eliminate the stress, but we can change how
we perceive it. So, we can turn stress into an opportunity to
experience gratitude and even joy. This makes for healthy
hormones.” Adds Gates, “Sugar and simple carbohydrates weaken
the adrenals. Minerals are the food of the adrenals. Dark green
vegetables and ocean vegetables, those are a wonderful way of
getting minerals. Sleep is very important—the best quality sleep is
before midnight. If you go to bed at 8 pm and get up around three
or four you wake up so much more refreshed.” (Gates also explains
that nighttime computer and television use interfere with sleep by
disrupting the pineal gland’s production of melatonin). also see p8

task. Jensen points out that “Hormones the body doesn’t use and
those coming from the outside, the liver is supposed to couple these
with different agents and shoot these couples out in the bile through
the intestine. If the liver is overworked or congested, it doesn’t do
things as efficiently. Once these couples hit the gut, they will
become divorced if the intestinal bacteria aren’t healthy, then these
hormones go back into circulation. Excess estrogen is most
predominant today. Ten days out of the month, take herbs to
support the liver—dandelion, milk thistle, turmeric. It’s also helpful
to drink lemon juice and water, and eat beets, dandelions, and
artichokes.”
To create colonies of healthy bacteria, Gates advocates cultured
foods: “Eating cultured foods on a daily basis is an essential part of
maintaining hormone balance. Have them at every meal. I have
cultured vegetables, kvass, fermented coconut milk, milk kefir.”
Healthy gut flora, she adds, are also essential for effective absorption
of nutrients from food.
Feeding Your Hormones
What foods does the body need to create hormone balance? “We
need to understand the danger of refined anything,” says Sellman,
“junk food, bad oils, too much sugar. Because the liver plays a key
role in metabolizing hormones, too much alcohol, caffeine, fatty
foods and spicy foods can exacerbate hot flashes and other
symptoms.” Sellman adds that skipping meals is very stressful to
the adrenals.
The experts have also already touched on the importance of
cultured foods and land and ocean vegetables. According to
Northrup, “Your basic diet is vegetables, fruits, and protein. Many
women really have to be careful about grains. Depending on your
genetics, you may not have the equipment to metabolize them well.
I think everyone needs some animal protein.” According to Donna
Gates’ book, The Body Ecology Diet, a health-building meal consists
www.celtic-seasalt.com
of 20 percent protein (acid-forming food)
and 80 percent vegetables (alkalizing food).
Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD and Certified
Nutrition Specialist based in Couer
D’Alene, Idaho, appreciates meat and eggs
for their zinc content, an important
nutrient for hormonal health.
Gates emphatically advocates using egg
yolks: “Raw egg yolks are fabulous for
building progesterone and testosterone
[important because many women have too
much estrogen in relation to these
hormones], and they’re a great source of
vitamin A, a very important vitamin for
hormone balance. Beat one or two a day
into drinks or salad dressings.” To energize
the thyroid, Gates recommends melting
coconut oil in a frying pan, slipping in four
eggs and cooking just until the whites
congeal and the yolks are soft. Sprinkle the
yolks with Celtic Sea Salt®. Scoop the
yolks up with some coconut oil- avoiding
the whites.
Also crucial for hormone balance are
proper fats. Gates says “Raw butter, raw
cream, evening primrose, flaxseed, borage,
and fish oils, these fats contain precious
fatty acids that convert to cholesterol. The
body uses this cholesterol as a raw material
to make the sexual hormones.” Lynne
August, a medical doctor based in
Newfane, Vermont, concurs, saying, “The
most important thing for people’s health is
the tissue cholesterol. If you don’t have
enough cholesterol in the tissues, your
glands can’t make the hormones, it’s that
simple. If tissue cholesterol is low, you have
to increase the saturated fats and decrease
the unsaturated fats in the diet. Coconut
oil is a good source, and I think the best
source of saturated fats is butter. To me,
diet should be geographic, and we don’t
live in coconut oil climates.” (See p2 for
more info on the relationship between
cholesterol and hormones).
Ann Louise Gittleman is “very impressed
with the use of flax as a primary
component of hormone balance.” Ground
flax seeds, she explains, contain lignans,
which have both anti-estrogenic and
estrogenic abilities that the body uses as
needed. Lignans, she points out, also
protect against estrogen-fueled breast
cancer and are much more effective than
soy in terms of their ability to modulate
estrogen. (Gates believes that eating soy is a
mistake for menopausal women: “It cools
the thyroid, and we need a warm, energetic
thyroid. The phytic acid in soy leaches
minerals.”) Gittleman suggests that
menopausal women take two tablespoons
daily of lightly toasted flax seeds (ten to
twelve minutes at 250° F) ground, whereas
menstruating women who want more
regular cycles need about two teaspoons
daily.
Finally, says August, eating Celtic Sea
Salt® to taste will assist your body in
maintaining good overall function. (see our
Spring 2003 issue on electrolyte balance)
Love and appreciate your body. Understand
that symptoms are not a failure on your
body’s part, but a call to action—
something is throwing you out of balance.
Eat organic food, stay away from plastics,
pesticides, household cleaners, and
prescription drugs wherever possible.
Find ways to manage and reduce your
stress.
Exercise regularly—walking just half an
hour every day greatly assists hormone
balance.
Make sure to eat plenty of vegetables and
cultured foods.
Eat hormone precursors: healthy fats and
raw egg yolks. see p23 on coconut oil
Eat two tablespoons ground flax seeds daily.
Editor’s Note: Hormones play important roles
in our lives from beginning to end. It is
important to understand the intricate
relationship they have with all of the body’s
other systems. It can be difficult to stop taking
synthetic hormones. Our bodies like to
moderate hormones and any drastic shifts, such
as adding or removing synthetic hormones, or
perhaps even from stress-induced adrenal
exhaustion, etc, can create a roller coaster
effect.
Menopause and hormone regulation of any
sort can be confronting on many levels. We
hope this article gives support and information,
but we realize that the topic is far more
complicated than a newsletter article can cover.
We do sell the books mentioned and some of the
products mentioned (see p10-14). We
recommend anyone headed down the path to
manage hormonal changes seek the guidance
and support of a professional.

WhenYou Need
More Help
In keeping with the principles of holistic
health care, this article focuses on how to
maintain hormone balance with minimal
intervention and safe and natural
approaches.There are times, however, when
we require extra help. If changes in your
thinking, diet, and lifestyle are not bringing
about the better health you seek, increase
your level of support and intervention.
The next safest level of intervention after
food and lifestyle changes is a homeopathic
remedy. “Listen to your symptoms and that
guides you to the right homeopathic remedies,”
explains Frank J. King, Jr., naturopath,
chiropractor, and Founder of King Bio
Pharmaceuticals, based in Asheville, North
Carolina. “You would probably correct the
major menopausal symptoms if you directed
the remedies towards whatever problems were
there previously. Homeopathy works deeply to
correct the imbalance and activate our body’s
ability to live and die in health.”
Herbal remedies are the next step up.They
are safe, but can have side effects.
Vanderhaeghe recommends using a
standardized extract combination of black
cohosh, Vitex (chasteberry), and dong quai
to assist in achieving hormone balance.
If you are still having symptoms at this
point, you may want to work with a
competent holistic practitioner to identify
whether you suffer from specific
biochemical imbalances, organ function
problems, or nutrient deficiencies.
If examination indicates some strong
weaknesses, you may require temporary
HRT to bring about symptom relief that
speeds healing. HRT, for example, may help
you to sleep better. Bioidentical hormones
are safest, and they should be professionally
prescribed based on the results of salivary
hormone testing. Some women’s health
advisors advocate the use of progesterone
cream, but Jensen is wary of this approach:
“Women tend to be estrogen dominant.
Progesterone is a precursor hormone, it can
convert to estrogen. There is a time to give
progesterone, but I would do it medically, while
addressing the cause of the deficiency. In saliva
hormone testing, they’re finding that women
taking progesterone cream sometimes have
2,000 times the progesterone they should. You
can’t self-diagnose.”

Weight Management, Menopause, Depression, Allergies, Autoimmune Disorders
Thyroid disorders affect up to 20 million Americans, the majority
of which are women. Thyroid disorders are often misdiagnosed as
depression, aging, or other causes of tiredness, fatigue, or
forgetfulness. Therefore, a thyroid disorder is a possibility that must
be ruled out in diagnoses of conditions such as depression,
fibromyalgia, lupus, sleep disorders, and various other conditions.
Fortunately, diagnosis of thyroid problems is relatively specific with
blood tests of thyroid hormone levels.
The thyroid, a small gland at the base of the throat, secretes a
cluster of hormones that conduct a variety of functions including the
metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates, oxygen consumption and
bone formation. Thyroid hormones affect almost every organ of the
body, and good health depends on a stable supply: too little and we
become lethargic, overweight and depressed; too much and our
bodies run too fast, causing weight loss, diarrhea, and an irregular
heartbeat.
As long as 50 years ago, research was underway regarding the
impact of hydrogenated oils on thyroid function. Oils are
hydrogenated to lengthen shelf life. This process driven by
convenience has contributed to the growing number of Americans
trying to outrun high cholesterol and heart disease. As well, there are
some foods that can boost thyroid function. See suggetions to right.
Thyroid activity, over or under, can be caused by a number of
factors: some medicines (lithium and phenylbutazone), radiation,
hormone cancers, genetics, poor diet, and iodine in the diet (too
much, too little, and/or synthetic iodine).
Iodine is one of the main thyroid secretions. It is an important body
building agent which detoxifies and decreases inflammation. At later
stages in life, iodine deficiency can cause hair loss, slowed speech, and
drying and thickening of the skin. An average adult’s iodine
requirement is only about a millionth of an ounce (0.00003 grams)
per day. Iodine is vital to the delicate balance between health and
sickness.
In the 1950’s a US health initiative dictated that iodine be added to
table salt (as salt was a prevalent and econmical vehicle to carry the
supplement). This has created entirely new chain of health issues. The
added iodine colors the sodium chloride purple, so the iodized salt is
then bleached. The bleaching leaves the salt bitter, so dextrose is then
added to enhance the flavor. Finally, anti-caking agents are added to
help manage the moisture in salt. This initiative aimed at better health
then took salt, a natural product and healthy source for minerals and
subjected it to a chemical process where all the minerals are removed
(it is then repackaged and sold as supplements or to industry). The
by-product of this process, pure sodium chloride, is packaged and
sold as iodized table salt.
Synthetic iodine (such as that added to table salt) should not be
used. There is mounting evidence that the use of synthetically iodized
salt recommended by MDs to help the thyroid, commonly makes
thyroid conditions worse, tending to generate an overactive thyroid.
BALANCING
ACT
Editor’s note: If you have any thyroid related problems, consult a
professional for help adjusting your diet. Processed foods contain iodized
salt, therefore, most people who include processed foods in their diets or eat
out are consuming adequate (but synthetic) amounts of iodine. If you feel
you need to supplement your diet with iodine, kelp is an excellent natural
source. (Celtic Salt® does not contain synthetic iodine- nothing added,
nothing removed.)
Some women develop
hypothyroidism during
menopause. Some
studies link this to
increased soy products,
but the jury is still out.

Coconut Oil for a healthy Endocrine System
Coconut Oil has many health-promoting
properties, one of which is its ability to
lower cholesterol by stimulating thyroid
function. A properly working thyroid
stimulates the conversion of cholseterol into
the anti-aging hormones, progesterone,
DHEA(“the mother of all hormones”) and
pregnenolone. Pregnenolone has been
shown to adjust for the effects of stress,
enhance brain function, modulate chemical
reactions such as calcium protein binding,
gene activation, and enzymatic operations
inveolved with storage and retrieval of
memories.
What is pregnenolone?
Pregnenolone is the parent of all hormones.
Pregnenolone enhances mental function
(concentration, learning, mood, motor
coordination, etc) and balances hormones.
Simply put, it keeps our brain functioning
at peak capacity. All sex hormones are
derived from pregnenolone, including
DHEA (a steroid hormone secreted by the
adrenal glands, which is converted into
many other hormones involved in growth,
strength and aging). Pregnenolone
supplements are available, but naturally
occurring pregnenolone is available in
Coconut Oil.
Who should promote it in their diet?
A malfunctioning thyroid will allow
hormones to stagger, producing menopause
symptoms and decreased fertility. Dr.
Raymond Peat recommends women with
hormone imbalances increase pregnenolone
intake. As with other hormones, production
slows with age. By age 75 we produce only
about 40% as we did in youth.
Even though pregnenolone showed great
benefits in studies 50 years ago, it has been
an ignored until recently. Natural
substances like pregnenolone are not as
profitable pharmaceuticals, so studies that
confirm such are harder to fund. There have
been promising results for pregnenolone
used as an alternative for estrogen
replacement, menstrual problems, lupus,
PMS, post-natal depression, menopause,
rheumatism, arthritis, seizures, mood
disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, clinical
depression, diabetes, MS, immune
enhancement, insomnia and sleep disorders,
tumor inhibition, fibromyalgia, nerve
injuries and anxiety. Pregnenolone can
reduce appetite and cravings and increase a
sense of well being. Everyone can benefit
from pregnenolone.

GuaSha ancient healing
Do you suffer from chronic pain? Excess
systemic toxicity?
Poor circulation?
Lymphatic congestion? Inflammation?
Fatigue? Infections? Physical or emotional
stress? If so, then you will greatly benefit
from Gua Sha.
Gua sha (pronounced gwaw saw) stone
massage is practiced most often in rural
Chinese homes and in numerous clinics in
China. In the United States, many Chinese
families do gua sha at home.
Gua means "to rub or scrape." Sha is the
red, pebbly rash that surfaces afterward,
signifying that cellular debris, or "stagnant
blood," as the Chinese call it, is being
expelled through the skin.
Like acupuncture, gua sha is based of the
Asian concept of promoting qi (pronounced
chee) - the body's vital energy or life force.
Practitioners of Eastern medicine believe
that qi runs along meridians of energy that
start or end in the fingers, feet and face.
Some find it may cause mild to moderate
discomfort, others feel no pain or even are
tickled by the technique. Red bumps will
appear during treatment and will disappear
in a few days.
Points on the meridians govern particular
organs. For example, when a patient's wrist
turns red during gua sha, it means qi is
blocked in the lungs, large intestine, small
intestine, heart and pericardium (the sac
around the heart). Redness in the face can
signal a blockage in the gallbladder, stomach,
bladder or large intestine. Most
practitioners perform gua sha on arms,
back, neck and chest.

FI S H OIL Fish oil is a great
source of the omega-3 fatty acids
that have many benefits.These fatty
acids can help stabilize the rhythm
of the heart, which could reduce
sudden cardiac death by 50-80%.
Omega-3 fatty acids also help to
reduce
inflammation,
lower
triglycerides, support the pancreas
and brain. Also, they may improve
symptoms of arthritis, depression,
immune deficient diseases and
menopause.
Our bodies cannot create omega3’s without first obtaining them
from food. Linolenic acid, the
primary omega-3 fatty acid, can be
obtained through many fats, oils,
nuts, and soybeans, but these non-
fish sources do not provide some
of the omega-3s (EPA and DHA)
that are important for normal
brain development, nervous system
function, and eyesight. These
additional fatty acids (EPA and
DHA) are also thought to reduce
the risk of arthritis, high blood
pressure, heart disease (as well as
overall vascular health) and some
cancers.
A few studies suggest that flaxseed oil
may promote the growth of prostate
cancer in men (but not breast cancer in
women). Therefore, until studies are
complete, we suggest men use Fish Oil
instead of Flaxseed oil, while women can
use either.
LONGEVITY FISH OIL
Longevity Science Omega-3 Fish Oil is guaranteed to be free of pesticides and
heavy metals. It contains a natural, proprietary anti-oxidant complex to inhibit the
processes of oxidation which cause rancidity. Lower quality oils often taste bad
becasue they have gone rancid. The high quality and the natural lemon flavor of
these Longevity Science oils are responsible for their more pleasing flavor.
