Name: Early music
Category: Medieval music
Pieces of music
Piece 1: Pour Mon Cœur (By Early Music Consort)
Piece 2: Dance Royale (By Early Music Consort)
Musical feature 1: Vocal music
Description: There are many types and styles of vocal medieval music. These
include:
- Folk songs
- Court songs
- Plainchant
- Motet
Plainchant and motet were used for religious songs. Medieval court music was
mainly composed and performed by poet-musicians who were born into noble
families.
Musical feature 2: Dance music
Description: Popular dances from this period include: A farandole which is a
line dance with two crotchet beats in a bar and an estampie which is a couples
dance with three crotchet beats in a bar. It was probably composed by one of
the troubadours and performed unaccompanied. It may also have been
accompanied by another medieval instrument such as the psaltery. Estampie
comes from the French word ‘estamper’, which means ‘to stamp the feet’.
Musical feature 3: Instruments
Description: The types of instruments included: Loud outdoor instruments
such as the pipe, tabor (drum), shawm (a wind instrument), trumpet and
cornet. Soft indoor instruments such as the fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, psaltery and
rebec. A hurdy-gurdy is like a viola with a handle at one end. A psaltery is a
stringed instrument that is plucked with the fingers or a plectrum. A rebec is a
fiddle with a rounded back.
