Cancer has taken over the other diseases as far as its incidence, morbidity and mortality is
concerned. Cancer kills more people than AIDS, Malaria & TB combined and without significant
improvements. Each year over 127 lac people receive the diagnosis of cancer and 76 lac people
die from the disease. If no action is taken, the burden is expected to reach 260 lac new diagnoses
and 170 lac deaths worldwide by 2030. About 30% - 40% of the cancers can be prevented and one
third can be cured by early diagnosis and better management. In India there are an estimated 7 to
9 lac new cancers diagnosed every year.
Of the more than 100 types of cancers, Esophageal Cancer is the eighth most common cancer
worldwide and the sixth most common cause of deaths from the cancers. The highest prevalence
and mortality rates are found in ‘Asian Esophageal Cancer Belt’ which stretches from Iran to
China, and its Southern border is the Valley of Kashmir. In India, Esophageal cancer is the fourth
most common malignancy in both sexes but it is the most common malignancy followed by Lung,
Stomach, Colon and Breast cancers in Valley of Kashmir. Almost every third cancer patient has GI
tract malignancy. Out of the 8056 cancer cases registered at Regional Cancer Centre, SKIMS in the
last three years (2008-2010), 1217 (15%) were esophageal cancer patients.
Therefore, as a frequent malignancy, takes maximum toll, warrants serious attention in valley on
the eve of the world cancer day. A concerted and coordinated fight of scientists, clinicians and
oncologists is needed to understand etiology of the EC, explore means of its early diagnosis and
improve the prognosis, surgical and therapeutic modules and management. The symposium will
provide a podium to experts and researchers to share their experiences and understanding on the
theme. This will generate awareness among the masses on its risk factors, genesis, diagnosis and
treatments. The symposium will be a beginning of the required efforts for decreasing the
incidence, mortality and morbidity of the cancer in our Valley. But still more is needed in this
direction to tackle the situation in this region of the world.
Department of Biochemistry, University of Kashmir, since its inception has been working on the
various aspects of the esophageal cancer and has gained important understandings in the subject.
We have recently initiated number of studies in collaboration with scientists across the globe and
which are being funded by various national and international agencies. We believe these studies
will help in tackling the burden of the cancer in the valley and look forward for more
collaborations and inputs in this direction.
