A pinch of salt
Here are some of the favourite foods that C’ptain Hartley’s
crew like to snack on.
C’ptain Hartley is worried that they might be eating too much salt which can
make their blood pressure go up and is bad news for their hearts.
Can you help him?
1. Tick the boxes for the foods which you think might have salt in them.

C’ptain Hartley has visited the Dead Sea, which is so salty you can float in it.
A glass of Dead Sea water can contain 30 grams of salt, that’s the same as
6 teaspoons of salt - not very tasty.
5. Pirate Young’s salty diet
One of C’ptain Hartley’s crew is called Pirate Young and is 10 years old.
He should only be eating 5 grams of salt each day MAXIMUM to keep his heart
and arteries healthy.
Here’s what he ate yesterday:
Breakfast
2 slices of bread toasted

Lunch
half a tin of tomato soup
2 slices of bread

“Wake up and shake up, pirates”
A wake up and shake up session is a great way to get your pirates ready for the day
and have a fun mini-workout that will benefit their hearts and bodies. You can use
the ideas listed below or make your own pirate routine up in advance with your class.
The more space each pupils has the more they can put their hearts into the actions

lie down in your hammock (if space permits) or stand up and shift your
weight from one foot to the other as if you were rocking in your
hammock

the sea’s a bit rough out there, so you can sway a bit more

have a big yawn and stretch your arms high and then wide

jump out of your hammock

touch your toes five times and reach up high in between

twist to the left to see who’s got up behind you and then twist the other
way

now you’re half awake, it’s time to get cracking - run up the stairs to the
deck, keep going there are 3 flights of stairs

stand and report for duty and inspection

time to hoist the sails – pull the rope with your hands – reach up high
and then pull down, and again and again –

now we can hoist the big main sail – this is the heavy one so pull down
with all your strength, and again and again – 10 pull should do it

got to keep our pirate ship spick and span, so let’s scrub the decks with
a broom – dip it in the soapy water and scrub, come on, the more effort
you put in the shinier the deck and the happier the C’ptain Hartley will
be – let’s count to 20 while we do it

next task (a pirate’s life is always busy)? The c’ptain says his portholes
need a good clean because a whale sneezed on them – let’s get a cloth
and start polishing making little circles with our arms – one way
(clockwise) – 1,2,3…. 10; now the other way (anti-clockwise) 1,2,3…..10
RS_25_b

well done, the c’ptain is very pleased so you can go and have a rest …
after you’ve climbed up to the look out

climb up the rope ladder – lift your knees and reach up high with your
hands to grab the rungs – don’t look down, it’s very scary – it’s a long
way up to keep going…

phew, we made it. What can we see? Turn round to the left searching
with your eyes… now back again

you’ve seen an island – jump up and down with joy

quickly, back down the ladder to tell the captain

climb the other one into the boat

let’s row across the sea to the island - row, row, row

run round the island to find the ‘X marks the spot’

dig for treasure

lift the heavy treasure chest

carry it back to the boat with big difficult steps (it’s very heavy)

row back very fast

climb the ladder … phew, get your breath back.

the captain’s taken the treasure to his cabin – you can go back down the
stairs to your hammock with big heavy footsteps because you are
exhausted

climb into your hammock

have a good stretch … and a good snore…
RS_26
Captain Hartley is worried about some of his crew because they’ve
started smoking. Cigarettes contain lots of chemicals which can
damage the heart and arteries. Can you solve these smoking puzzles?
1.

2.


Pirate Thickblood has a nasty habit of smoking
a cigar for breakfast. He also has one with his
tea. He does this every day of the year.
How many cigars does he smoke in a year (HINT:
there are 365 days in a year)?
………………………………
…………cigars
If ten cigars cost 1 gold coin – how much does he spend a year
on cigars?............................
……...gold coins
Pirate Smoky-beard loves his pipe and puffs away all day.
His teeth are very stained. He gets through one pouch of
tobacco (that he puts in his pipe) each week.
How many pouches does he get through in a year?
………………………………
………………… pouches
If one pouch costs half a gold coins, how much does this bad
habit cost him a year? ……………………………gold coins
3.
Who is spending more a year, Pirate Thickblood or Pirate
Smoky-beard? ………………………………………………..
4.
Pirate Knobblyknees has been very good . He has given up
smoking and is saving up to buy a treasure map. He used to
spend 10 gold coins every six months on cigarettes.
One of his mates is selling a treasure map for 50 gold coins.
How long before Pirate Knobblyknees can buy the map

Pumping heart instructions

1. A colourful heart
Can you colour in the heart? Use blue to colour the side where the
deoxygenated blood is and use red to colour the side where the
oxygenated blood is.
2. A map of your heart
Cut out all of these labels, there are 15 in all. Stick them onto the
correct spaces on your heart diagram.

Did you know?
The heart has special flaps, called
valves, that make sure the blood
flows in the right direction and
stops it going back the wrong way.
I have marked these with a star on
your picture of the heart.

Your heart is an amazing muscle; it pumps blood all around your body.
Follow the cycle to become an expert on how your heart works.
1. A vein brings blood from your
body back to the heart. This
blood has dropped off all the oxygen it carried while travelling
around the body. We call it
deoxygenated blood.
7. The blood is now deoxygenated
and the cycle starts all over again.
2. The deoxygenated blood goes
into the first waiting room on the
right hand side of the heart, called
the right atrium. It stays here
until the heart squeezes it down
