Types of famous diamonds
The diamond is the rarest and hardest gem, because of this it is the most expensive of
them all.
In the diamonds category there are some diamonds that people were (and are) so
impressed of them that they got names and their history was recorded.
KOH-I-NOOR ("Mountain of Light")
The KOH-I-NOOR is the first diamond that has been found in India. It is one of the
largest diamonds that had been found.
This beautiful diamond is believed to have been set in the famous peacock throne of
Shan Jehan.
After its re- polishing it is now weight 108 carats and form parts of the British Crown
Jewels.
Cullion
This is biggest diamond that was ever found.
The Star of Africa
The Star of Africa is the biggest diamond that has been polished from the Cullinon.
This diamond weights 530.2 carats and has 74 facets. It is now part of the British
Kingdom collection.
The Excelsior (higher)
The diamond could have been the biggest diamond that was ever found, if not for the
Cullion. The Excelsior was shaped into ten pieces, when the biggest three were cut
into 21 gems.
The African mine worker that found it, was rewarded with money, a horse and a
saddle.
Orloff
The worlds third largest cut diamond. In the start it was in the temple of Brahma,
until it was acquired by the Shah Nadir.
The diamond was named after Grirori Orbff that gave it to Catherine II, of Russia in
1772.
The Idols Eye
The name of this diamond comes from a legend. In the legend told that Sheik of
Kahmir stole it from an idols eye to pay a ransom for Princess Rasheetah.
The Centenary
One of the world biggest diamonds. It took for the Master-cutter almost three years to
cut it into a diamond with total of 247 facets. Part of the British Crown Jewels.
The Premier Rose
The Premier Rose has been cut into three diamonds, the "Premier Rose family".
The largest of the Rose family is the second largest pear shaped diamond around the
world and was sold for 10,000,000$.
The Regent
The Regent isn’t the original name of this diamond, while Louis XV was a boy it was
called "The Pitt". The diamond named "The Regent" and set in the crown that Louis
wore at his Coronation. After the France revolution Napoleon situate it in the hilt of
his sword. Now days it is in display in the "usée du Louvre"
The Blue Hope
Was once owned by Louis XIV and called the "blur diamond of the crown", but was
stolen during the French Revolution.
Since the families of two of the owners had die after a year, it is believed to be cursed.
It is now showed in a museum in Washington. The believers in the Blue Diamond
curse were afraid that when the U.S.A will own the diamond the curse will be on all
the country.
The Sancy
This diamond was named after one of its owners, Seigneeur de Sancy. The diamond
has been moved from one hand to another. In 1688, when it was in the owners of
James II, it has disappeared while he escaped to Paris from England (his kingdom).
