• A complete sentence has two parts:
– A subject
– A predicate
• The subject tells us WHO or WHAT the
sentence is about. REMEMBER?
• The predicate tells us what the subject
does AND has a verb
• Being able to identify subjects and verbs
can help YOU with your writing!
• An action verb is a word that shows action
in the PREDICATE part of a sentence.
• The action verb tells us what the subject
of the sentence does.
• 1. Claudia stirs the soup.
– What is the subject? Underline it
– What is the predicate? Circle it.
– What is the action verb? Draw a box around it
• 2. Blake chops the carrots.
– Subject?
– Predicate?
– Action verb?
• Ed watches the chef.
• He likes TV cooking shows.
• The food smells good.
• Ed mixes the food in the bowl.
• Everyone eats the meal.
• Dad shops for food with Ed.
