Research and complete the chart on the major battles that took place during the
European Theatre of war.
1. Battle of the Atlantic
Location: Atlantic Ocean and the immediate seas or oceans around it.
Date: 1939 to 1945
Info & Outcome: Considered the longest continuing battle of World War II. All powers in
Europe were involved in the affair. Battle was officially considered over only with the defeat
of Nazi Germany in 1945.

2. Operation Torch
Location: North Africa
Date: 1942
Info & Outcome: Invasion of North Africa by American and British forces. North Africa was
to be the preparation point for the invasion of Southern Europe as well as allowing the US
more control over the Mediterranean Sea.
3. Operation Husky and Operation Avalanche
Location: Sicily and Italy
Date: 1943 to 1945
Info & Outcome: Invasion of Sicily from North Africa allowed US troops to move into
mainland Italy. Some of the most intense fighting of WWII took place in Italy. Italian
government led by Mussolini fell by 1943, but would not be officially surrendered by Nazi
Germany until close to the end of the war.

4. Operation Overlord
Location: Normandy, France
Date: June 6th, 1944
Info & Outcome: Major invasion of Europe by Allied forces. More than 150,000 soldiers
stormed the beaches. Historically this day is referred to as “D-Day”.

5. The Battle of the Bulge
Location: The Ardennes Forest (Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany)
Date: December 1944 to January 1945
Info & Outcome: Last effort by the German military to split the British and American forces.
German advancement was originally successful, but came to a halt. Some of the most
brutal fighting to take place during the war, but this would be the last offensive of Nazi
Germany.
6. Battle of Berlin
Location: Berlin, Germany
Date: April and May of 1945
Info & Outcome: Massive invasion of Berlin by the USSR. Brutal urban combat that ended
only when the Soviet Union captured the Reichstag thus ending World War II.
