Describing situations affecting climate change and ways to reduce
carbon footprints to be used in EAP 1660 (Grammar Level 6) focusing
on Competency 3 – correct usage of conditionals both real and unreal.
By Walter Kozloski
Project for MDC Earth Ethics Institute
The conditional in a nutshell
Situation
“If” clause
“Result” clause
True in present or future
Simple present
( I have…)
Simple present
or
Will + simple form
Untrue in the present or
future
Simple past
(I had.., I were …)
Would + simple form
(dictionary form)
Untrue in the past
past perfect
(I had had…)
Would have + past
participle
Conditional example sentences
Situation
True in present or future
“If” clause
If we reduce carbon
emissions,
“Result” clause
we can help prevent global
warming.
If we do not reduce carbon the planet Earth will
emissions,
become much warmer.
Untrue in the present or
future
If we were to stop
depending on fossil fuels,
we would be able to
greatly reduce our carbon
footprint.
Untrue in the past
If we had known 100 years would we have stopped
ago what causes global
using fossil fuels?
warming,
Did you
know
this?
Around 20 % to 25% of carbon emissions result from
deforestation and changes in the Earth’s landscape.
What’s the
condition?
If we stop cutting down trees to raise corn …to feed
cattle … to supply cheap meat to fast food restaurants,
we will help prevent increases in global warming.
Did you
know
this?
In the United States, automobiles and trucks are
responsible for emitting 1/5 of the total United States'
carbon emissions.
What’s the
condition?
If Americans were to change to carpooling, driving
less, and using more fuel-efficient cars, we would
greatly reduce carbon emissions.
Did you
know
this?
Cooling and heating your home is responsible for
almost 50% of electricity use for the average American
family.
What’s the
condition?
If Americans were to insulate their homes better, not
only would money be saved, but the Earth would be
happier.
Did you
know
this?
Although the United States has only 5 percent of the
world’s population, our country contributes 22 % of the
world’s carbon emissions.
What’s the
condition?
If Americans had known about the consequences of
global warming 100 years ago, would our grandparents
have built our economy on fossil fuels?
Did you
know
this?
Although the climate change is linked to stronger
hurricanes, more drought, and bleaching of the corals in
the oceans, perhaps the scariest of all is the threat of
rising sea levels.
What’s the
condition?
If the seas were to rise 20 -40 feet above what they are
today, much of Florida would be covered with water
and uninhabitable.
Did you
know
this?
Remember that we all can make a difference
by becoming more aware of how our actions
have direct consequences towards our
planet.
What’s the
condition?
If we all work together, we can help change
the course of global warming!
