Odd and Even Numbers An ODD NUMBER is an integer (whole number) which CANNOT be divided exactly by 2. All odd numbers end in either a 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. An EVEN NUMBER is an integer (whole number) which CAN be divided exactly by 2. All even numbers end in either a 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. If I have 10 counters and I split them into two groups then both groups are the same size (they both have 5) so we can say that both groups are equal that is why we call even numbers even as when you divide them by 2 you end up with two equal sized groups. If we have 11 counters (an odd number) and divide them by 2 however we will have one counter left over (an odd one out). It might also be useful to remember: even + even = even odd + odd = even odd + even = odd odd x odd = odd even x even = even odd x even = even 1
