Mesopotamia Map Assignment
PART I
Draw a map of ancient Mesopotamia. Use the maps found on pages 31, 37,
and 38 or your textbook as references. Draw the map as accurately as
possible. Keep your map to scale (relative distance between places should
be kept accurate) and make sure it’s as organized and neat as possible.
Your map should fit the entire page and should have all required landmarks.
Label the following on your map:
Bodies of Water: Tigris River, Euphrates River, Persian Gulf, Red
Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea.
Cities: Ur, Babylon, Ashur, Nineveh, Akkad, Kish.
Regions: Identify the regions of Sumer, Babylonia, Assyria, and
Chaldean Empires at their peaks, and indicate where the
Persians and Hittites lived.
Other: Provide a legend, a North indicator, a border, a title, waters
should be blue, etc.
PART II
Answer the following questions regarding the physical geography of the
region using your notes and text (pgs. 30-32). Type the answers on a
separate piece of paper and attach them to the map when handing in the
assignment.
1. What are the four main advantages provided by the rivers to
developing civilizations?
2. List the five main empires that rose and fell in Mesopotamia.
3. How did Mesopotamia’s geographic location (at the crossroads of
three continents) both aid and case difficulties for the groups that lived
there?
4. In a chart, outline the positive and negative features of the
environments of Northern and Southern Mesopotamia. Which region
do you think developed stronger Empires? Why?
