Practice No. 407 Reference: 10/06 Version 3 Page 1 of 5 Last up-dated April 2008 HCC AS 31/00 WORK RESTRICTIONS FOR STAFF WITH INFECTIOUS CONDITIONS This summarises the measures to be taken when a member of staff contracts, or is in contact with, an infectious/notifiable disease. It specifies any need to restrict the employee’s activities within their workplace - to the point of exclusion until free from infection, and supports infection control measures: Hampshire County Council Occupational Health Unit is available to give advice and provide support in respect of all infectious conditions that affect staff. 1. These guidelines will apply in the following circumstances: 1.1 Where an employee is suffering from, or suspected to be suffering from, an infectious / notifiable disease. 1.2 Where an employee is in close contact with a case of infection within their own home. 2. All staff will receive appropriate training in infection control. This will include an understanding of the need to prevent cross infection between staff, service users and others. 3 Where there may be a risk to service users and other staff, all staff are required to report any occurrences of infection, as described in 1, to their immediate line manager or duty manager. 4. Each case reported will be reviewed individually and any action taken will be determined by the following factors and circumstances: 4.1 The nature of the disease or infection. 4.2 The likely routes of its transmission. 4.3 The persons most likely to be infected. 4.4 The employee's specific role profile and accountabilities - those with responsibility for service user care and/or food handling will be considered as being a very high risk. 4.5 For the specific member of staff involved: i. Their degree of susceptibility to infection (based on previous sickness absence / Pre-employment Questionnaires and medical history where relevant). ii. Their level of job related training. iii. The effect of any restrictions on their ability to fulfil their role responsibilities. 5. Dependant upon circumstances, and the outcome of 4, the employee may be: 5.1 Re-deployed to duties which pose less risk of cross infection. Such redeployment would be considered temporary until such time as the infection has cleared. 5.2 Excluded from work until the infection has cleared. 6. The following table summarises recommended work restrictions for staff with known or suspected infectious diseases or conditions. 7. In all cases of staff re-deployment or exclusion, proof that the infection has cleared must be obtained in the form of a medical certificate before the employee is allowed to resume normal duties.
