Introduction to Basic
Anatomy
Planes, Positions, & Movements of
the Body
Planes of the
Body
Frontal
Transverse/Horizontal
Plane
Positions of the Body
Supine (Face-Up)
Prone (Face Down)
Anatomical
(Upright w/Palms Out)
Movements of the Body
Flexion/Extension

Movement of most
joints
– Ex. Elbow, Knee,
Fingers, Toes, etc.

Flexion
– Bending of the
joint

Extension
– Straightening of
the joint
Hyperflexion &
Hyperextension
Abduction & Adduction

Movement of a large # of
joints
– Ex. Shoulder, Hip, Fingers,
Toes

Abduction
– Bring away from the body

Adduction
– Bring toward the body
Depression & Elevation


Usually a
movement of
the shoulder
blade
Elevate
– Lift up

Depression
– Push down
Pronation & Supination


Movement of the
forearm & foot
Pronation
– Rotate to palm/foot
down

Supination
– Rotate to palm/foot
up
Inversion & Eversion


Usually a
movement of the
foot
Inversion
– Turning the foot
inward

Eversion
– Turning the foot
outward
Plantarflexion &
Dorsiflexion


A movement of the
ankle
Plantarflexion
– Moving (extending)
the foot away from
the body (toes
pointed down)

Dorsiflexion
– Moving (flexing)
the foot toward the
body (toes pointed
up)
Circumduction



A movement of the
shoulder, hip, wrist,
ankle, fingers, etc.
The limb is rotated in a
circular motion
Large amounts of
motion being produced
Internal & External
Rotation


Movement found at the
shoulder & hip
Internal Rotation
– Rotate the limb toward
the body

External Rotation
– Rotate the limb away
from the body
Lateral Flexion


A movement
of the trunk &
neck
“Side-bending”
