Connected
Defining an Ecosystem
• Ecosystem – all of the organisms living in an
area together with their physical environment.
• Ecosystems are connected. There are no clear
boundaries between them. Things move from
one ecosystem into another.
The Components of an Ecosystem
• Biotic factors – the living and once living parts
of an ecosystem, including all of the plants
and animals. This includes dead organisms,
dead parts of organisms, such as leaves, and
the organisms’ waste products.
• Abiotic Factors – nonliving parts of the
ecosystem.
• Organism – an individual living thing
• Species – a group of organisms that can mate
to produce fertile offspring.
• Population – all the members of the same
species that live in the same place at the same
time.
• Communities - a group of various species that
live in the same place and interact with each
other.
Habitat
• The place where an organism lives is called its
habitat.
Niche – an organism’s pattern of use of its
habitat.
