518 AP Latin Ms. Murphy INDIRECT COMMANDS An indirect command consists of a noun clause + the subjunctive following verbs of: …persuading …urging …asking …commanding, etc. Indirect commands follow the SAME SEQUENCE OF TENSES as a regular purpose clause: ut/ne + present/imperfect subjunctive -­‐If the main verb is Present, Future, or Future Perfect Indicative, use Present Subjunctive -­‐If the main verb is Imperfect, Perfect, or Pluperfect Indicative, use Imperfect Subjunctive Different verbs necessitate different cases of the Indirect Command: hortor acc + impero dat + peto a(b) + abl & oro ut/ne mando ut/ne postulo ut/ne moneo + persuadeo + quaero + obsecro subjunctive subjunctive subjunctive rogo e.g., I asked him to come. Rogavi eum ut veniret. Mandavi ei ut veniret. Petivi ab eo ut veniret. Vocabulary: hortor (1*): encourage impero (1): order, demand peto (3): desire, entreat oro (1): beg, ask mando (1): order, command postulo (1): demand moneo (2): instruct persuadeo (2): persuade quaero (3): demand, ask, obsecro (1): implore seek rogo (1): ask, beg *Numbers in parentheses indicate the conjugation to which each verb belongs*
