Solving One Step
Addition & Subtraction
Equations
To solve equations, you must use inverse operations in order to
isolate the variable on one side of the equation.
Whatever you do to one side of an equation, you MUST do to the
other side!
+5
+5
Examples:
y + 9 = 16
- 9 -9 The inverse of adding 9 is subtracting 9
y=7
m - 16 = 4
+16 +16 The inverse of subtracting 16 is adding 16
m = 20
Remember - whatever you do to one side of an equation, you
MUST do to the other!!!

m = 12
The inverse of multiplying by 6 is dividing by 6
2 x m = 3 x 2 The inverse of dividing by 2 is multiplying by 2
