A-level Sociology Summer work Culture Sociologists tend to use the term ‘culture’ to refer to the way of living of a particular society. Culture considers behaviour and beliefs of a society or group, which includes knowledge, language, faith, art, music, fashion, morals, laws, customers, traditions, lifestyle’s and more. Cultures vary hugely across the world. There is a diversity (variety) of cultures. To do Using You Tube look at the HSBC adverts for the ‘Worlds Local Bank’ campaign. Explain briefly how culture can vary between different countries Socialisation Socialisation is the process by which an individual learns the norms and values of society. It is how we learn how to be a member of society. Socialisation continues throughout our lifetime. Primary socialisation is usually carried out by the family unit and then secondary socialisation is the continuation of this process and is usually carried out by agents such as Education, peer groups, workplace, media and religion. There is a debate in society as to what has made you the person you are. Is it genes (nature) or your upbringing (nurture)? Sociologists would argue that nurture is more important than nature. Some aspects of culture are learned – we are not born knowing norms and values. To do Using the internet and you tube, research the following feral (Wild) children: - Kamala and Amala – wolf children - Oxana Malaya In your opinion is human behaviour shaped more by nurture than nature? Subculture A subculture is often defined as ‘a culture within a culture’ – a smaller grouping of people who share distinctive norms and values within a wider culture. For example, within UK culture, there are subcultures based on age (e.g. youth subcultures such as punk or emos), ethnicity, music / fashion, political beliefs, and so on. All of these groups are part of the wider UK culture, but also part of distinctive subcultures. To do: Research a subculture of your choice and create a short 5 minute presentation to share with the class. It may be a PowerPoint, mind map or a presentation method of your choice. Sociological theory It is important that you have a grasp of the main theoretical theory for Sociology. Using the internet and books in your local library, try to explain the following: What is the functionalist perspective? What is the Marxist perspective? What is the interactionist perspective? What is the feminist perspective? Please try your best with this work. If you do not understand it, please do not worry, we will cover it on the course. Mrs Kennedy
