Prokaryotes
Eukaryotes
- Older – more primitive
- Younger– less primitive
- Smaller
- Larger
- No membrane-bound organelles
- Many membrane-bound organelles
- No nucleus
- Nucleus
- Simpler (less complex)
- More complex
- Only bacteria
- All organisms except bacteria
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes have the following in common
 They both have:
 DNA
 ribosomes
 cytosol
 a cell membrane
The Theory of Endosymbiosis
 The Theory of Endosymbiosis states that:
 About 1.5 billion years ago, larger prokaryotes engulfed smaller prokaryotes and
enslaved them. They formed a partnership which resulted in the first eukaryotic
cells. This process is how mitochondria and chloroplasts were formed.
The Cell Theory
 The Cell Theory states that:
 All living organisms are composed of cells.
 The cell is the basic unit of life.
 Cells arise from pre-existing cells.
