Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Corneal, External Diseases, A&E and Primary Care Service Prescribing Guidelines for Ocular Lubricants MODERATE dry eye MILD dry eye 1) Preserved Hypromellose 0.3% 1) e.g.Optive® 3) 2) Carmellose 0.5% /PFDrops 3) Unpreserved Sodium hyaluronate ~0.1% e.g.Hylo-Tear®/ Lubristil® drops Unpreserved Carmellose 1% 2) Unpreserved Sodium hyaluronate 0.2% e.g. Hylo-Forte® Carbomer 980 0.2% e.g. Lumecare ® e.g.Lumecare ® 1) e.g.Celluvisc® 1% / PFDrops 1% TM 0.5% TM Carbomer 980 0.2% Unpreserved Sodium hyaluronate ~0.1% e.g.Hylo-Tear® / Lubristil® drops e.g.generic preserved bottles 2) SEVERE dry eye 3) Liquid paraffin ointment e.g. VitA-POS® Systane® for artificial eyes Lubristil® gel for patients with scleral lenses RESTRICTED Ciclosporin preparations only to be initiated by external diseases clinicians Hypromellose 0.3%, PVA 1.4% Unpreserved bottles (unlicensed) for patients who can only use pipette PRESERVATIVE FREE formulations should be prescribed for patients with - True preservative allergy - Evidence of epithelial toxicity from preservatives - Soft contact lenses wearers - Long term treatment or frequency > 6 times daily OTHER ocular lubricants on Moorfields Eye Hospital Formulary Refresh®, Simple eye ointment, Duolube® (unlicensed) PF ointment, Minims® Saline, Ilube®, Acetylcysteine 10% PF(unlicensed) bottle, Hydromoor® PF.
