Brief History
• Antoine van Leeuwenhoek (1600s)
o Invention of the Microscope
o Observed microorganisms, called them “Animalcules”
• Robert Hooke, 1655
o Introduced the term Cell
o Examined thin slices of cork from the bark of an oak tree
o Observed empty, honeycomb-like boxes (Cell Wall)
o Wrote the book Micrographia
• Robert Brown, 1830
o Identified a darkly staining structure at the center of
every cell (Nucleus)
• Matthias Schleiden, 1838
o All plants are made up of cells
• Theodor Schwann
o Animals are made up of cells
• Rudolf Virchow, 1858
o Cells came from preexisting cells
