ROMAN FASHION
Roman Dresses came form art. The dress hairstyle of an older woman who
wears a short-sleeved ‘stola’ with a ‘palla’ on top. When people today have
their portraits done they usually chose to wear fairly dressy clothing, perhaps
wanting to look their best for succeeding generations. In any event sculpture
and paintings were expensive and only the wealthy could afford to be
memorialized in this way. The tunic became a standard item in every woman’s
wardrobe. It tended to be long, floor length in fact for matrons, but color,
weight, fabric, texture, fit, sleeves and method of construction varied
according to social class and the dictates of fashion.
MARRIAGE
Marriage itself was in fact not regarded as having been fully consummated
until the fist child was born in the house. On the evening the bride would
sacrifice her childhood toys to the lares, the family spirits At the end of the
banquet bringing together the relatives of both families, the bride groom,
wresting the bride from her mothers arms, would pretend to abduct her while
she would pretend to resist. From when she was married, two different fates
could await the bride. If she was lucky enough to be fertile and give birth to
three or more children, she would be a respected mother, wife to be envied
and would gain acceptance in the community. If however she provide infertile
she would be threatened with a repudiation, not as bad as it might first seem.
Having returned to her father’s house with her dowry she might upon his
business affairs and amorous diversions.

WHAT WAS ROMAN ART
INFLUENCED
BY?
Roman art was
majorly influenced by
the Greeks and Etruscans. However,
statues made by the Romans were more
detailed and added more features that are
considered unattractive. From looking at
preserved paintings in Pompeii, we can tell
that the Romans also had an advanced
grasp on shading, texture, light, and
perspective. Some common forms of art
included sculptures, paintings, and
glassblowing.

WHAT WAS ROMAN MUSIC LIKE?
Just like most of Rome, its music
was also influenced by the Greeks.
common instruments included
trumpets, drums, cymbals, and
flutes. In Rome, becoming a
musician was frowned upon. Since
most of Rome was influenced by
the Greek culture, it is weird that
Rome did not embrace Greek’s
music as well.
Here is a video with typical Roman
music.

blowing
Surprisingly, Romans were very
interested in glass blowing. Most
glass blown objects were cups with
god of theater an wine on them.
(His name was Bacchus) The cups
were generally used at funerals
and special events. These flasks
were normally around four inches
tall and were a yellow-brown color.
WHAT IS THE ROMAN COLOSSEUM ABOUT?
Originally called the Flavian Amphitheater, the Colosseum received its new name sometime after the 8th
Century.
Its name came from its immensive size. Its capacity was about 50,000 spectators.
The Colosseum stands free today with no hillside help. Unlike most Stadiums today.
The colosseum is basically the model for all the sports stadiums today.
