The role of lung multidisciplinary team (MDT)
Information for patients, relatives and carers
What is the role of the multidisciplinary team?
Your doctor has referred you to a respiratory consultant at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. To ensure
that you receive prompt and appropriate treatment your care will be discussed at meetings held by a
multidisciplinary team (MDT). The team meets on a regular basis and will review your tests and investigation results,
and then discuss the appropriate treatment for you.
It is unlikely that you will meet all the members of the team at any one time, but you will usually see the consultant
or a colleague, along with a specialist nurse – your key worker. They will discuss with you the findings of any
investigations, and possible treatment options.
We want you to fully understand what is happening to you so that you can make an informed choice about your
treatment options. If you are uncertain about your treatment and wish to discuss this further please contact us. We
will be happy to talk about any of these issues with you - we do not want you to feel confused or worried.
Who’s who in the multidisciplinary team (MDT)?
Consultant Chest Physician - Dr Sal Matti and Dr Kevin McKinlay
All of these consultants specialise in treating lung cancer. Each consultant will have a team of doctors working with
them. Your consultant - and his or her team - will arrange for any further tests and investigations to be carried out.
They will explain the results to you and discuss your treatment options. There are a variety of tests, investigations,
and treatments available and some of them are carried out in other NHS hospitals. If you need an operation you may
be referred to another specialist NHS hospital.
Consultant Oncologist – Dr Sangeeta Paisey
A medical oncologist is a doctor who specialises in treating cancer with chemotherapy drugs. They advise on the best
course of treatment for your particular cancer taking into consideration your general wellbeing. They will monitor
your response to treatment and discuss any changes with you.
A clinical oncologist is a doctor who specialises in treating cancer with the use of radiotherapy and chemotherapy or
systemic treatments which include targeted agents. They plan, prescribe and supervise the course of radiotherapy
treatment. You will see the clinical oncologist before, during and after your course of radiotherapy so that the effect
of the treatment can be monitored.
Consultant Thoracic Surgeon - Miss Belcher
The thoracic surgeon specialises in lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma surgery. There are various tests
which the surgeon may perform to make sure you are suitable for surgery. The surgeon is located at The John
Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and visits Basingstoke Hospital twice a month for outpatient clinics.
Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse, Key worker - Samantha Westbrook
The specialist nurse will see you at your hospital appointments with the consultant, and will be your point of contact
throughout your care. She can provide support, advice, and information on cancer of the lung.
She can explain the treatments and investigations planned for you and discuss any concerns you may have. It is
important that you understand what is happening to you throughout the course of your treatment. The specialist
nurse will act as a link between you and the lung team.
Radiologist - Dr Jonathan Brant
A radiologist is a doctor who is specialised in performing x-ray investigations. The radiologist and their team will
carry out your investigations such as x-rays, ultrasound scans, CT scans or MRI scans. They can also perform imaging
guided biopsy procedures such as under CT scan guidance. These investigations will help the team to diagnose and
plan any treatment.
Histopathologists
A histopathologist is specialised in tissue diagnosis. They examine tissue taken as a biopsy, or taken during an
operation, under a microscope. This will help the team to diagnose the type and extent of the problem and plan any
further treatment you may require.
Dietitian - Claire Gill
The dietician offers specialist advice on nutrition. You may be referred to the dietician at some point during your
treatment to support you with any nutritional issues you may have. She will listen to your nutritional concerns,
assess your nutritional requirements, give you advice, and can also arrange any supplements which may be required.
She will see you in hospital but can also visit you at home if you unable to attend an appointment.
Specialist Palliative Care Team
The specialist palliative care team provides symptom management, psychological support and advice for patients,
their relatives and healthcare professionals. Aiming to help people feel as well as possible, they are often involved
alongside other treatments. If you would benefit from referral to this team, one of the team will see you in hospital
or at home, whichever is the most convenient for you.
