Q.1. Fill in the blanks:
1. Temperate means neither too hot nor too cold.
2. The temperate zone has four distinct seasons summer, winter, autumn and
spring.
3. The tallest tress in the world are the redwoods of California the USA.
4. The downs of Australia are one of the largest areas in the world for sheep.
5. The pine and fir trees are well-known conifers.
6. A giant sequoia in California is called the ‘General Sherman’
1
Q.2.Grasslands are known by different names in different parts of the world:
North America
Prairies
Eurasia
South America
South Africa
Australia
Steppes
Pampas
Veldt
Downs
Q.3. Give reasons:
1. Today very little of the original prairies remain- because much of the land
has been turned into agricultural land and urban areas also increasing.
However, in many areas there is an effort to restore the prairies and
reintroduce the traditional plants and wildlife.
2. Grasses are able to survive fires- because two-thirds of many grasses are
below the ground.
Desert VegetationGobi Desert of Central Asia are so dry that
they are deserts.
These areas have desert vegetation which is
adapted to this region
Eg: fleshy leaves, thorny stems and grasses.
2
Deciduous forests
Found in eastern and western United
States, Canada, Europe and parts of
Russia.
Trees lose their leaves every year
Eg; Oak, maple, beech and elm.
Coniferous forests
Cooler areas have coniferous tress.
Tall, straight, evergreen, cone-bearing
trees with leaves that are needle-like.
Eg; pine and fir.
Mediterranean vegetation
Some parts of the temperate zone,
including those around the
Mediterranean Sea
Dry hot summer and winter rain
Also called Mediterranean
vegetation
E.g.; cork oak, conifers like redwood and giant sequoia and small bushes like
lavender and rosemary.

Q.5. Answer the following questions:
1. Where are the temperate zones located?
Ans: The temperate zone in the northern hemisphere is located between the
Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle. The temperate zone in the southern
hemisphere is located between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic
Circle.
2. What does the word ‘temperate’ mean?
And ‘Temperate’ means neither too hot nor too cold. This describes the
climate of the temperate zone, which is not as hot as the hot zone nor as cold
as the Frigid Zone.
3. What is the difference in climate between those areas that lie closer to the
tropics and those that are away from the tropics?
Ans: Those areas of the temperate zone that are near the tropics are warmer
than the areas of the temperate zone that are further away from the tropics.
4. What are the grasslands of North America and Eurasia called?
Ans: The grasslands of North America are called prairies and those of
Eurasia are called the Steppes.
5. What are conifers? How are they different from deciduous trees?
Ans: Conifers are tress that have needle – like leaves and cones in which their
seed is found. They grow in temperate regions and cold areas where snow
falls. The snow can slide off the needles without damaging them.Conifers are
different from deciduous trees because they do not lose their leaves in cold
weather.
6. Describe how some animals and birds of the temperate zone behave in
winter.
Ans: Some animals of the temperate zone hibernate during the winter. This
means that they go into a deep sleep and only wake up once spring comes.
Other animals, particularly birds, migrate to warmer places as winter
approaches. They return to the temperate regions once spring comes.
7.Why is this region called the granary of the world?
Ans: Because in some wealthy countries, there are huge mechanizes farms
which produce vast amounts of wheat.
