Sjögren’s Syndrome Austen Bowling Kiara Bell What is Sjögren's Syndrome? • a chronic disorder in which the white blood cells attack the saliva and tear glands. • it’s a disease that causes dryness in the mouth and eyes and sometimes in the nose, throat, and skin • pain and stiffness in the joints and aching muscles can occur • this autoimmune disease can affect other parts of the body as well, including the kidneys and the lungs Classifications of Sjögren’s Syndrome • Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome: when the condition does not develop as a result of another autoimmune disease. • Secondary Sjögren’s Syndrome: when the condition develops because of or alongside another autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. How is Sjögren’s Syndrome an autoimmune disorder? • Sjögren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder because the body’s white blood cells attack their moisture-producing glands. • Autoimmune diseases feature the abnormal production of extra antibodies in the blood that are directed against various tissues of the body. How is Sjögren’s Syndrome caused? • There is no known cause to having the Sjögren’s Syndrome. • However, there are very few known contributing factors, such as: – Viral Infections – Heredity – Hormones • Because it is inherited, there is no particular way to prevent developing the disease.
