Algebra 2 Course Syllabus
Description
This course is the continuation of Algebra 1. Course content includes properties of the linear equations, matrices, complex number system,
quadratic functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and models, polynomial and rational functions, as well as sequences, series and
probability and statistics.
A graphing calculator is required
Expectations (objectives) of this course
Unit 1 Data and Linear Representations:






Students will be able to represent a real world linear relationship in a table, graph, or equation.
Students will be able to identify linear equations and linear relationships between variables in a table.
Students will be able to graph a linear equation and linear inequality.
Students will be able to write a linear equation for a given line in the coordinate plane.
Students will be able to write a linear equation in two variables, given sufficient information.
Students will be able to solve linear equations, linear inequalities, absolute value equations. And absolute value inequalities.
Unit 2 Numbers and Functions:






Students will be able to identify and use properties of real numbers.
Students will be able to evaluate and simplify expressions involving exponents.
Students will be able to graph a relation, state its domain and range, and tell whether it is a function.
Students will be able to write a function using function notation and evaluate it.
Students will be able to perform operations with functions, including composition.
Students will be able to find the inverse of a relation or function.
Unit 3 Systems of Equations and Inequalities:


Students will be able to solve systems of linear equations using graphing, substitution, and elimination.
Students will be able to solve and graph a linear inequality.
Unit 4 Matrices:




Students will be able to represent real world data in a matrix.
Students will be able to perform various matrix operations.
Students will be able to find and use the inverse and determinant of a matrix.
Students will be able to solve systems of linear equations using matrices.
Unit 5 Quadratic Functions:






Students will be able to solve define, identify, and graph quadratics functions.
Students will be able to solve quadratic equations by taking square roots, by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.
Students will be able to use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems involving right triangles.
Students will be able to use the vertex form of a quadratic function to locate the axis of symmetry.
Students will be able to classify and find all roots of a quadratic equation.
Students will be able to graph and perform operations on complex numbers.
Unit 6 Exponents and Logarithmic Functions:






Students will be able to write and evaluate exponential expressions to model growth and decay situations.
Students will be able to classify exponential functions as functions of growth or decay.
Students will be able to write equivalent forms for exponential and logarithmic equations.
Students will be able to solve equations involving logarithms and exponents.
Students will be able to simplify and evaluate expressions involving logarithms.
Students will be able to define and use the common and natural logarithmic function to solve exponential and logarithmic equations.
Unit 7 Polynomial Functions:




Students will be able to identify, evaluate, add subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials.
Students will be able to classify polynomials and identify and describe the important features of a graph.
Students will be able to use the remainder and factor theorem to solve polynomial equations.
Students will be able to find the real zeroes of polynomial functions and state the multiplicity of each.
Unit 8 Rational Functions and Radical Functions:






Students will be able to identify and evaluate rational functions.
Students will be able to graph a rational function, find the domain, the asymptotes and any holes in the graph.
Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify rational expressions.
Students will be able to solve rational equations.
Students will be able to solve radical equations.
Students will be able to analyze the graphs of radical functions and evaluate radical expressions.
Unit 10 Counting Principles and Probability :





Students will be able to find he theoretical probability of an event.
Students will be able to apply the fundamental counting principle.
Students will be able to solve problems involving linear permutations and circular permutations.
Students will be able to solve problems involving combinations.
Students will be able to solve problems by distinguishing between combinations and permutations.
Unit 11 Discrete Mathematics: Series and Patterns:




Students will be able to recognize arithmetic and geometric sequences and find the terms of each
Students will be able to evaluate the sum of a series
Students will be able to find the arithmetic means between two numbers
Students will be able to find entries in Pascal’s Triangle and use this to predict proabilities
Unit 12 Discrete Mathematics: Statistics:




Students will be able to find the mean, median, and mode of a data set.
Students will be able to create a stem-and-leaf plot, histogram, circle graph, or a box and whisker plot for a data set.
Students will be able to find and use relative frequency to solve probability problems.
Students will be able to find the range, quartiles, and interquartile range of a data set.
