The Sun:
Quiet component:
Chromosphere
Solar Activity: Solar flares
=> microwave bursts

Main Sequence Stars
• Detect photospheric emission from over 600
stars => dramatic improvement of absolute
flux calibration
• Stellar astrometry
• Stellar activity: chromospheres, flares (e.g. M
dwarfs), evolution of.
• Massive star winds

Evolved Intermediate Mass Stars
with ALMA
• Dust formation and circumstellar chemistry via
detailed studies of nearby sources
• Mass loss return to ISM via surveys of galactic
plane AGBs (GLIMPSE w/ Spitzer)
• C/O ratios & isotopic studies
• Sub-arcsecond imaging of Spitzer detected
circumstellar dust shells.
• And…..

ALMA: Magellanic Clouds
LMC: 0.1-0.5 x solar
SMC: 0.01-0.2 x solar
Lower metallicity => lower dust content
-studies of molecular outflows in known evolved
Stars studied by Spitzer,…

track the evolution
of massive stars
from the main
sequence to their
spectacular deaths.

Massive Star Death with ALMA
• Targets of opportunities to study new supernovae
• SNR-ISM shocks: extended to LMC/SMC
• Supergiants dust formation, circumstellar
chemistry
• Gamma Ray Burst followup to study their
environment and test massive stellar explosion
paradigm

Summary
• Stars and dying stars are excellent first light
objects and should be on the list of first targets
for ALMA 2008
• Target of opportunities should be pursued with
ALMA and synoptic observations of fields
considered
• ALMA will provide a deeper look into our nearest
neighboring stars and extend our study of evolved
stellar populations to the local group
