Succession
The series of predictable
changes that occur in an
community over time is
called SUCCESSION
Diversity in Science
The French naturalist Adolphe Dureau
de la Malle was the first to make use of
the word succession concerning the
vegetation development after forest
clear-cutting
There are two types of
Succession
1) Primary
2) Secondary
Primary Succession is
the series of changes
that occur in an area
where no ecosystems
previously existed.
This might include…
An area that is a new island formed
by the eruption of an undersea
volcano
The area of rock uncovered by a
melting sheet of ice.
Primary Succession
The first species to
populate this area
are called pioneer
species
Pioneer Species
Pioneer species are often
lichens and mosses carried
to the area by wind or
water
Example of a Pioneer Species
Lichen
Primary Succession
Mount St. Helens
You might have heard about the eruption in 1980 of Mount St.
Helens in Washington. The mountain was covered with a thick layer
of mud and ashes. But by the following summer, the mountain was
covered with green grass and pink fireweed flowers.
Secondary Succession
Secondary succession is the
series of changes that occur
after a disturbance in an
existing ecosystem
Unlike primary succession ,
secondary succession occurs
in a place where an
ecosystem has previously
existed.
Secondary Succession
Occurs more rapidly
then primary
succession
Review Primary and Secondary Succession
The Forest is Alive Again
Fire destroys all living things above ground
Roots that survive and seeds blown by the wind sprout and
form new plants.
New growth appears.
