Basic Geometry Concepts (Cont.)
Triangle is a polygon with three sides.
A triangle with equal sides is called equilateral.
A triangle with two equal sides is isosceles.
A triangle with sides having different lengths are called scalene.
The sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees.
In a right triangle the side opposite the right angle is called
hypotenuse. The other two sides are the legs.

If two or more triangles have the same size and shape, they are
called congruent.
If triangles have the same shape, they are called similar.
The Pythagorean Theorem states that:
The sum of the squares of the legs in a right triangle (leg 1 squared + leg 2
squared) is equal to the square of the hypotenuse (hypotenuse squared).
Hypotenuse
Leg 1
3 inches
5 inches
Leg 2
4 inches
3 squared (9) + 4 squared (16) = 5 squared (25)
hypotenuse = square root of 25 = 5
