Unit 2
Describe the system used for naming and
classifying plants.
Identify the major groups of plants.
Describe the differences between annuals,
biennials, and perennials.
Our Objectives
Classified based on similarities
There are seven categories plans can be
grouped in
Kingdom
Phylum a.k.a divison
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
Variety
How are plants classified?
Even though we can categorize plants in 7
different categories, we only use 2 names
The genius (1st letter always capitalized)
The species (not capitalized)
Both are italicized
This type of naming system is called binomial
nomenclature and was developed by Carolus
Linnaeus
Plants often have common names by vary from
regions to languages
How are plants named?
Bryophytes- non vascular
plants ex: mosses
Ferns- vascular plant
Reproduce through spores
Gymnosperms- reproduce
through seeds
Like dampness
Small
Usually reproduces with a
cone
When reproduction is
used with a cone it is
known as a conifer
Angiosperms- seed plants
whose seeds develop within a
fruit
Have a flower
Vocabulary
-Deciduous- losses leaves in
winter
-Evergreen- keeps leaf’s all year
-Dicots- plants with 2 cotyledons
in their seed
- flowers in
multiples of 4-5, netted
veins, and stems
which
are organized in a
ring
pattern
ex: roses, petunias,
geraniums
-Monocots- single cotyledon
-flowers in 3’s, parallel
veins, narrow leaves
Ex: grasses, sweet corn,
lilies
What are some ways that we
can put plants into groups?
Plants can be classified by life cycle
Annuals- grown from seed, flower, reproduce
seeds, die
They have a herbaceous stem which means there
is no woody tissue in them
Biennials- live for 2 years, flower, die
Perennials- live for 3 or more years, herbaceous
or woody stem
What is the difference between an
annual, biennial, and perennial?
