Don’t Stress Writing Dates in Sentences
Writing the date correctly is simple if you remember the difference
between cardinal (1, 2, 3, …) and ordinal (1st, 2nd, 3rd, …) numbers. Use
cardinal number is the date follows the month, such as January 1. Use
ordinal numbers if the date precedes the month, as in 1st of January, of if it
stands alone, as in the first (1st).
Correct: Today is January 1.
Incorrect: Today is January 1st.
Also correct:
 Today is the 1st of January.
 Today is the first of January.
 Today is the 1st.
 Today is the first.
