Specializing in heart surgery – Caring for infants, children,
adolescents, and adults with congenital heart disease
The Pediatric Heart Surgery
Program at Penn State Hershey
Children’s Hospital
Children (and their families) who are faced with surgery to
repair congenital heart defects are fortunate to have easy access
to outstanding care right here in central Pennsylvania. The
pediatric cardiology and heart surgery team (Penn State Hershey
Children’s Heart Group) at Penn State Hershey Children’s
Hospital has been repeatedly recognized among the best in
the nation by US News & World Report. And–with success and
survival rates that far surpass the national average–the program
offers the level of complex and sophisticated care that is often
found only in larger institutions based in urban settings.
Penn State Hershey Children’s Heart Group offers an experienced
team of physicians and surgeons who specialize exclusively
in the management of congenital heart disease (heart defects
that are present at birth). The pediatric cardiology team is
comprised of doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and
medical management of heart defects. The team boasts a full
complement of physicians with diverse individual expertise
in echocardiography (ultrasound evaluation of the heart), fetal
ultrasound, electrophysiology, and cardiac catheterization;
as well as exercise physiology, hypertension, obesity, and
cardiovascular wellness.
Children benefit from a team appraoch that combines the
expertise of pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons with
the support of pediatric intensivists, anesthesiologists and other
highly trained specialists.
Pediatric Heart Surgeons
Diagnoses and Operations
John Myers, M.D., and Brian Clark, M.D., lead the pediatric heart
surgery team. The surgeons are experienced with all types of
congenital heart disease, including the various complex forms of
single ventricle heart disease. As repeatedly demonstrated by the
reporting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ Congenital Heart
Surgery Database, Penn State Hershey provides outstanding
clinical outcomes that exceed the national average, despite more
complex cases managed by the Penn State Hershey team than
most pediatric heart surgery programs. Drs. Myers and Clark are
board-certified in both cardiothoracic surgery and congenital
heart surgery.
The following is a list of common heart conditions
requiring surgical intervention:

Adult Congenital Heart Program
Penn State Hershey has one of the oldest and most experienced
programs for the care of adults with congenital heart disease.
The Penn State Hershey team of expert cardiologists helps
provide specialized evaluation and management of patients with
congenital heart disease as they transition into adulthood.
Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital
The new Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital facility was
opened in 2013, focusing on advanced therapies and familycentered patient care. Within the new Children’s Hospital is
an operating room dedicated to pediatric heart surgery, as well
as a pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory. The Pediatric
Cardiac Care Unit is located within the Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit and is staffed twenty-four hours-a-day, seven days-a-week
by pediatric critical care physicians.
The heart surgeons with Penn State Hershey Children’s Heart
Group participate with most major insurance and managed
care plans.
