 Minerals are natural resources found in the rocks, generally deep inside the earth’s surface.
 The process by which minerals are dug from the earth is called mining.
 Two types of minerals - Metallic and Non metallic.
 Iron is the most important metal.
 Coal, petroleum and natural gas are non-metallic minerals.
 Petroleum is refined to get petrol, diesel, kerosene, etc.
Define the following terms.
Ore-impure forms of minerals from which metals can be extracted are called. Metal has to be separated
from its ore to make it useful.
OILWELL- we get crude oil from under the earth or from under the seabed. Deep wells called oil wells
are dug to pump out the crude oil which is a thick, dark greenish brown liquid.
Mining- the process of digging out minerals from the earth is called.
Oilfield- an area where the oil wells are located is called.
Bombay high – A big oilfield is found off the coast of Mumbai, deep under the seabed. This is known as
Bombay High.
What is CNG?
Compressed natural Gas. It is becoming a popular fuel to run vehicles in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai.

In India we found the coal of bituminous type and of non – coking type.

Some of India’s main steel plants are located at Jamshedpur.
5. Name the important oil fields in India.
Digboi and Naharkatiya in Assam and Ankaleshwar and Kalol in Gujarat are the important oil fields in
India.
6. Where is gold found in India?
In Ramagiri field in Andra Pradesh and Kolar and Hutti in Karnataka.
7. How do we get aluminium? What is it used for?
It is extracted from an ore called bauxite. It is used for making utensils, aeroplane bodies etc.
8. Why petroleum so important for us?
Petroleum is very important to us because it is the main source of fuel for automobiles, railways and
aircraft. Its numerous by-products include fertilizers, synthetic rubber, medicines, lubricants, soap and
cosmetics.
