Daily Grammar Practice Vocabulary
1. noun = person, place, thing or idea
2. common noun = names a general noun; begins with a lower case letter
3. proper noun = a specific noun; begins with a capital letter
4. possessive noun = shows ownership
5. pronoun = takes the place of a noun
6. verb = shows action or helps to make a statement
7. helping verb = “helps” an action or linking verb
8. linking verb = links two words together
9. action verb = shows action
10. adjective = modifies (decribes) a noun or pronoun
11. adverb = modifies (describes) adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs
12. preposition = shows relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other
word in the sentence
13. prepositional phrase = group of words beginning with a preposition and ending
with a noun or pronoun
14. conjunction = joins words, clauses, and phrases
15. interjection = expresses emotion but shows no real connection to the rest of
the sentence
16. declarative sentence = makes a statement and ends in a period
17. imperative sentence = gives a command and ends in a period
18. exclamatory sentence = expresses strong feeling and ends in an exclamation
point
19. interrogative sentence = asks a question and ends in a question mark
