Sports Medicine Basic Vocabulary List
Distal – away from the center of the body or away from the point of origin
Proximal – nearest the trunk or the point of origin
Superior -above in relation to another structure, higher
Inferior – below in relation to another structure, lower
Medial – relating to the middle or the center
Lateral – on or to the side, outside, further from the middle
Palmer - relating to the palm
Dorsal – relating to the back, posterior
Anterior – in front or on the front part
Posterior – behind, in back , or in the rear
Prone – face downward position of the body, stomach lying
Supine – face upward position of the body, lying on the back
Superficial – on or near the surface
Deep – beneath or below the surface
Abduction - lateral movement away from the midline of the body
Adduction – medial movement toward the midline of the body
Flexion – bending movement which decrease the angle of the join by bringing the bones together
Extension – straightening movement which increases the angle of the joint by moving bones
apart
Inversion – turning the sole of the foot inward or medially
Eversion – turning the sole of the foot outward or laterally
Dorsiflexion – flexion movement of the ankle that results in the top of the foot moving toward the
anterior tibia bone
Plantarflexion – extension movement of the ankle that results in the top of the foot moving away
from the body
Pronation – internally rotating the radius so it lies diagonally across the ulna, resulting in the
palm-down position of the forearm
Supination – externally rotating the radius so it lies parallel to the ulna, resulting in the palm-up
position of the forearm.
