Rembrandt van Rijn 1606 - 1669 Rembrandt van Rijn Some interesting facts: • Rembrandt van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, Netherlands. • He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history, and the most important in Dutch history. • Rembrandt had a way of capturing a person's personality and emotion on the canvas. He used light and shadow to create a mood • He also painted numerous (over 40) self-portraits and portraits of his family. Sometimes he would spice these up by wearing fancy and colorful clothes. • Rembrandt's greatest creative work is seen in his portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. • He was a big spender and liked to collect art and other items. For this reason he never had a lot of money despite his paintings being fairly popular. • His home in Amsterdam has been turned into the Rembrandt House Museum. • Rembrandt died in 1669, having created more than 600 paintings and 1700 other works of art. Both his parents were musicians, and they actually wanted their son to become a composer when he grew up! Bizet loved music, but he also loved to read books. His parents wound up hiding his books so that he would spend more time on his music. At age 9 – he entered Paris Conservatoire. He was an accomplished pianist and wrote many pieces for the keyboard. He wrote a symphony when he was 17. It was discovered in 1935 in the archives of the Paris Conservatory where he studied. He wrote more than 30 operas, best know for Carmen. He joined the National Guard to defend Paris in the Siege during the FrancoPrussian War. At age 36, shortly after Premier of Carmen, he die of a heart attack.
