Intervals and Scales
The distance between two notes is called an interval. The distance between a pitch and
another with twice the frequency is an octave. The octave can be divided into 12 equal parts.
The interval between each of these parts is a half step. The half step is the smallest interval in
western music. When two half steps are added together, they create a whole step. The
following chart contains all of the intervals in an octave that are created by adding half steps
together
A scale is a collection of notes. The following scales are created with a sequence of half steps
(hs) and whole steps (ws). A scale degree is the name given to the particular note in a scale
and is written as a number with a cerat on top.
