NATURAL DISASTERS AND
SWEATSHOPS
Last Notes for this Unit!
THE RING OF FIRE:
• Many Japanese cities are threatened by earthquakes
• This is because Japan is part of the Ring of Fire
• A chain of volcanoes that line the Pacific Rim
• Out crust of the Earth is made up of a number of shifting tectonic plates that
continually bump and slide into each other
• In East Asian the Pacific oceanic plate encounters Eurasian continental plate
• Leads to building mountains and volcanoes
• All this movement leads to earthquakes
TSUNAMI:
• It is when an earthquake occurs under the ocean floor, part of the floor
moves
• This shift produces a huge wave of great destructive power
• Underwater volcanic eruptions and coastal landslide can also cause
tsunamis
• Some waves have reached heights of 100 feet
PREPARING FOR DISASTERS:
• Japan has established strict building code
• After every earthquake, engineers study how buildings reacted to make
improvements
• Newer safer than old
• Schoolchildren participate in yearly disaster drills with local firefighters
• Organizations offer courses on disaster preparedness and management
WHAT ARE TSUNAMIS?
IT IS WHEN AN EARTHQUAKE
OCCURS UNDER THE
OCEAN FLOOR, PART OF
THE FLOOR MOVES
THIS SHIFT PRODUCES A
HUG WAVE OF GREAT
DESTRUCTIVE POWER
SWEATSHOPS:
• In the mid 1990s, a series of banks and other companies went bankrupt
• This sparked panic among foreign investors, who began selling their Asian
stocks and currency
• Led to an awareness in East Asia that reform was necessary
• End of sweatshops and child labor
• These are workplaces where people work long hours for pennies under poor
conditions
• By the 2000s, reforms had begun and Asian economies were showing signs of
new life
