A solid metal sphere with radius 0.460 m carries a net charge of 0.200 nC.
Find the magnitude of the electric field at a point 0.106 m outside the surface of the
sphere.
Find the magnitude of the electric field at a point inside the sphere, 0.106 m below
the surface.
Solution:
As the metal sphere is conducting, the charge is distributed uniformly over the
surface, the field lines are spherically symmetric, and hence the field outside is the
same as if all the charge were concentrated at the center. Hence the magnitude of
the field at a point 0.106 m outside the surface, where the distance from the center
of the sphere is r = 0.460 + 0.106 = 0.566 m, is given by

As there is no line of force (or flux) inside the sphere, the field inside the sphere at
any point will be zero. Hence the field inside at 0.106 m from surface will be zero.
