Patient Label Here UMC PEDIATRIC IV FLUSH ORDERS Peripheral INT lines: 1. Upon completion of medication administration without continuous fluids, the INT will be flushed with 1 mL of normal saline. All T-connectors should be clamped when not in use. 2. When medications or fluids are not ordered, an INT will be maintained by flushing the catheter with 1 mL of normal saline followed by 1 mL of 10 units/mL heparin solution per shift. Central IV lines: Heparin flush – 3 mL of heparin as follows: 10 units/mL for patients less than 40 lbs (18 kg) 100 units/mL for patients greater than 40 lbs (18 kg) 1. Flush catheter with heparin solution every 12 hours even with continuous infusion. 2. Upon completion of medication administration, the central line will be flushed with 3 – 5 mL of normal saline followed by heparin flush as above.
