ABSTRACT
As the name depicts, a water level controller is an automatic device used to
monitor a particular level of water (for example in an overhead tank) and restrict
it from exceeding the limit.
The simple circuit design for such a controller shown here may be easily built and
installed and may relieve you from the headache of manually operating the water
pump in time. Automatic water level controller circuit is a simple engineering
project. It can automatically switch ON and OFF the domestic water pump set
depending on the tank water level. The main advantage of this water level
controller circuit is that it automatically controls the water pump without any
user interaction.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
Two probes ‘A’ and ‘B’ are inserted into water tank one at bottom and the other
one at the top. Initially when A and B are not connected, i.e. water level is low, the
input pin1 of the IC is at logic high and according to NOR gate truth table, the
output at pin3 will be at logic low. Since pin3 is shorted to pins 5 and 6, hence the
input to other NOR gate will be logic low signals. This gives a logic high signal to
the corresponding output pin 4. As current flows through the resistor to the base
of transistor, it starts conducting and acts as a closed switch. The relay connected
to the collector of the transistor gets energized and the NO contacts get connected
to the common contact and the water pump gets power supply from the mains
and starts working.
Now when water level rises in the tank such that probes A and B are connected
through water, current flows through them (As water is a conductor) and the pins 1
and 2 are connected through A and B to the negative supply of the battery. The
output pin3 is thus, at logic high level, causing the input pins of the other NOR gate
to be at logic high level and thus the corresponding output pin4 is at logic low level.
The transistor gets cutoff due to lack of bias current and the relay gets
correspondingly de-energized and the power supply to the water tank gets cut off.

APPLICATIONS
 Most of the circuits only display the amount of water present in circuit, but
this circuit will switch "on" and "off" the motor according to the level of
water present in tank.
 It will not automatically stop the motor when tank is fill but it will "on" the
motor when water in tank reaches below a specific point.
 It can be easily installed in over headed tanks because of lesser components
used in circuits.
 It prevents the wastage of water due to over flow of tank. Can be operated
with the help of 12V battery or adaptors (converts 230V AC to 12V DC)
readily available in markets.
