Ablatives We Should Know 1. Ablative of Place where a. What: Answers the question: Where? b. Usually with the preposition “in” c. E.g. Agricola est in villa. i. The farmer is in the house. 2. Ablative of Accompaniment a. What : Indicates what the noun is “with” b. Has the preposition “cum” c. E.g. Femina cum familia in villa habitant i. The woman lives in the house with the family. 3. Ablative of Means or Instrument a. What: The means by which, or the instrument with which b. Has no preposition; Can’t be a Person c. E.g. Deorum auxilio Graecos superabimus i. We will overcome the Greeks with the help of the Gods. 4. Ablative of Personal Agent a. What: With Passive Verbs, The doer of the action is expressed in this Ablative phrase. b.
