GERMAN AND ITALIAN EXPANSION IN WORLD WAR II
1. In 1939, Germany controlled only of itself, East Prussia, and later on in that year, Austria too. Outline this
area in red.
2. In 1939 Italy controlled only itself, Sicily, Sardinia and Libya. Outline this area in red, too.
3. By 1945, Italy and Germany controlled most of Europe. They had control of France, the Netherlands,
Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Albania, Corsica, Crete, Greece, Bulgaria, Rumania,
Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Norway & Denmark. Outline the boundaries of these areas in
blue.
4. Germany then conquered part of Russia, stopping just short of the cities of Leningrad (St. Petersburg),
Moscow, and Stalingrad. Circle these cities in black. Then connect the circles on their eastern side with a
blue line, showing how far into Russia the German line had advanced.
5. During the war, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, and Sweden remained neutral. Outline these countries
with a green dotted line.
6. Great Britain, Russia, and part of Northern Ireland indicated on the map were unoccupied European
countries that fought against the Axis powers. Trace these countries in black.
7. Put a black star at the location of the battles of Stalingrad, the Bulge, and Normandy (D-Day).
JAPANESE EXPANSION DURING WORLD WAR II
1. Show the Japanese area of occupation in June 1942 by circling in red.
2. Circle the US/Allied held areas in blue.
3. Label and circle the following in black: Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, Guam, Wake Island, New
Guinea, Midway, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Australia, and the Aleutian Islands
