THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
Libya covers an area of approximately
1,800,000 km2
Total population is 5.76 million
THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
ƒ
The Libyan climate ranges between
Mediterranean to arid and semi-arid.
ƒ
Precipitation ranges from 10 to 500
mm/yr. Only 5 % of the entire area
exceeds 100 mm annually.
ƒ
Potential evapotranspiration amounts to
1700 mm in the north coastal strip to
6000 mm in the south.
ƒ
Hydrological studies in arid regions
indicate
no
recharge
by
direct
infiltration when rainfall is less than 200
mm per year.
THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
ƒ Ground water is the primary source of freshwater,
accounting for 95.6% of total Libyan demand, Surface water
2.3%, desalination 1.4%, and Water treatment 0.7%.
ƒ Excessive abstractions of water from the coastal aquifers to
satisfy the ever increasing water demand, led to large draw
down of the water table. This in turn led to sea water
intrusion to the coastal aquifers and consequently fresh
water quality continued to deteriorate.
ƒ Hydrogeological studies indicate huge fossil water reserves
in desert basins ( i.e. Kufra, Sirt, Hamada and Murzug ).

THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
We can conclude that, adequate fresh water supplied by
the gigantic GMRA project, have become an integral part of
the infrastructure (including real estate) in all domestic,
agricultural and industrial aspects, both in rural and urban
areas, so as these areas grow, the need for infrastructure
increase.
THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
Which results in:
Encouraging people in rural areas to stay in their
land, due to Agricultural expansion.
