HOMEOPATHIC APPROACH TO LACTOSE INTOLERANCE
Does a cup of milk, a serving of ice cream or cheese pizza trigger symptoms? Lactose intolerance is malfunction of
the digestive system to process Lactose, a sugar found in milk. As soon as you eat foods that include Lactose, an
enzyme lactase in the small intestine breaks down into two types of sugar identified as glucose and galactose.
These sugars are then assimilated into the bloodstream and promote vitality to our bodies. When a person is
intolerant to Lactose, then the small intestine does not generate sufficient lactase enzyme to break down the
Lactose. Consequently, the Lactose does not assimilate and remains in the small intestine provoking symptoms.
Lactose intolerance should not be left untreated as it could advance to iron deficiency, anemia, Calcium deficiency
and even Osteoporosis.
Causes of Lactose Intolerance:

Genetic.

Injury to the small intestine.

Certain digestive diseases that damage the small intestine and interfere with absorption of nutrients from food
(eg.) Celiac disease, inflammatory bowel syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Crohn’s disease can affect lactase
production.

Stomach flu.

Born prematurely.

Overuse of certain allopathic drugs.

Environmental toxins.

Mental stress.

Old age.
Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance:

Nausea, vomiting.

Stomach cramps.

Distended, acid and gassy stomach.

Mouth ulcers.

Headache.

Recurrent cold and cough.

Ear infections.

Diarrhea or constipation.

Skin reactions.

Irritability.

Breathing difficulty.
Homeopathic approach to Lactose Intolerance:
Homeopathy is a remarkable choice for someone with a Lactose intolerance problem. Homeopathy has repetitively
demonstrated success in taking care of the internal maintaining cause of a variety of food sensitivities, in addition to
dairy. Homeopathic remedies are an influential channel to the inherent healing powers of the body. Homeopathy
considers Lactose Intolerance as a disruptive manifestation of the patient’s immune system. The symptoms of
Lactose Intolerance are not regarded as a disease to be cured in themselves, but a reflection of an underlying,
deeper malfunction. Homeopathic remedies heal with a deep acting constitutional approach, stimulating the body’s
natural defenses against Lactose Intolerance symptoms. Homeopathy will ease any intestinal swelling, and
progressively restore the micro flora, which facilitates in breaking down undigested lactose. The remedies will
reinforce the immune system, situate the body in a position to react less and less to dairy products. Homeopathic
remedies are made from natural substances and include specific allergens to gently, safely expose the individual to
their specific weak areas. This allows the natural defenses to properly adapt to the secretion of the lactase enzyme
and no longer react to it adversely. Natural health is a way of life and hence, natural remedies can be used to
prevent and treat Lactose intolerance. Some Homeopathic remedies that are commonly used to treat Lactose
Intolerance are mentioned below. These remedies are just a few of the commonly used Homeopathic
remedies and are mentioned only to create awareness about the effectiveness of Homeopathic medicines
in Lactose Intolerance. It is not advisable to resort to self-medication for any disease.
Homeopathic remedies recommended for Lactose Intolerance:
Aethusa: This is an exceptional remedy used for Alactasia, which is a congenital absence of lactose. These
children lose weight and cry with stomach pains, vomiting every time they swallow any dairy products. These
patients have an inability to digest milk and it makes them anxious, irritable, uneasy with palpitation. Their face
becomes puffed and red spotted, with sensation of dryness in the mouth and burning in the throat. They develop
diarrhea with undigested, thin, greenish stools, which is preceded by colic, exhaustion and drowsiness.
Apis Mellifica: This remedy is indicated for any anaphylactic reaction after drinking milk or with any allergen.
These patients may also complain of skin rashes like Hives, breathing difficulties from milk sensitivity.
China Officinalis: This is another well suggested remedy for patients who are unable to digest milk or dairy
products. Their stomach disagrees milk and they complain of bloating, flatulence and belching. They develop
violent sneezing, gas pains, which feel better only on bending double, with vomiting of undigested food particles.
Their face turns red with bloating and tongue is coated thick and dirty. They may also develop breathing problems
with suffocative mucus, hacking cough and rattling in chest.
Lac Vaccinum Defloratum: This remedy is made from skimmed milk and is well indicated for Lactose intolerance.
These patients complain of headaches with nausea, vomiting, obstinate constipation, passing large stools after
great straining and extreme fatigue.
Magnesium Muriaticum: This remedy executes brilliantly on patients who are unable to digest milk. They
complain of headaches and are mentally stressed. They develop blisters on their lips and tongue feels burnt and
scalded on ingestion of milk.
Self – Care measures for Lactose Intolerance:

Sip small servings of milk at a time, until the Homeopathic remedies overcome the problem.

Drink milk with other foods rather than drinking it alone, since it slows the digestive process and reduces the
chances of experiencing symptoms.

Include yoghurt in your diet.

Add other sources of Calcium to your diet like broccoli, green vegetables, almonds, oranges, tofu, soymilk, etc.

Know what you are eating, by reading food labels carefully.

Wear a Medical alert bracelet so others know if you have a reaction.

Help cleanse toxins from your body by drinking at least 12 - 15 glasses of water a day.

Reduce stress.
Hence, do not let Lactose intolerance constrain your lifestyle. Eat and drink all different kinds of milk and diary
products without the uncomfortable symptoms that come along with Lactose intolerance. Constitutional
Homeopathic treatment along with a proper diet and lifestyle change can help you overcome your Lactose
Intolerance and give you the freedom to be able to enjoy dairy products.
