COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to promote an understanding of the effects of microorganisms on
the human body. The study includes the standard precautions necessary for health
maintenance and infection control. The focus is on reduction of diseases that interfere
with basic human needs.
NECESSARY MATERIALS:
Students MUST come to class everyday with the following materials: Loose leaf paper to fit in your school
wide binder, pencil and pen for taking notes, highlighters, colored pencils, and markers. Section for Medical
Microbiology MUST be maintained up to date for this class.
CLASSROOM RULES
1.) Be on time and prepared with the necessary materials
a. All students are expected to be in class on time. Students must be ready with the necessary
materials by the time the tardy bell rings. Students will receive a referral upon the 6th tardy.
2.) The use of electronic devices is strictly prohibited unless allowed by me for instructional purposes only
3.) Eating or Drinking in class is strictly prohibited
4.) No grooming in class
In the event that a student fails to be in compliance with these policies, consequences will be followed as stated
in the EDHS student code of conduct.
Note: Any behavior deemed inappropriate by teacher can result in instant referral
EXPECTATIONS
1.) This class involves reading assigned material, mastering making of media and inoculation of plates and
slants, staining and identifying bacteria by given criteria, and intense study of microbial agents and their
effect on human health.
2.) All class information given comes from the teacher notes, videos, handouts, etc. If you
miss a class, YOU are responsible for acquiring necessary information.
EXPECTATIONS CONTINUED
3.) Safety is of utmost importance in this class as we will be culturing possible pathogenic bacteria.
Students will be informed of lab safety rules including dress code for lab. Any student, who has not
successfully completed lab safety training, will not be allowed to participate in lab activities.
4.) Academic honesty is of extreme importance. The guiding principle of academic integrity shall be that a
student's submitted work, examinations, reports, and projects must be that of the student's own work.
Academic dishonesty will be dealt with according to the student handbook and policies in line with the
campus and district.
5.) All students will be expected to meet assigned deadlines. Late work will receive a penalty of 10 points
per day. Students will be given the opportunity to redo failing assignments and will receive a maximum
grade of 70 upon mastering the concept.
6.) Students may only redo assignments within a 3week time frame. For example, assignments completed
within the first three weeks may only be redone by the end of the 3rd week of the nine weeks.
Assignments done within weeks 4-6 may only be redone by the end of the 6th week and assignments
done within weeks 7-8 must be done by the end of the 8th week.
7.) Every student MUST have a school ID in order to leave the classroom. (Example: going to the
restroom)
8.) Please let me know of any health condition that may put you at risk in this class, for example: asthma,
pregnancy, allergies, etc.
At the end of the nine week period, a comprehensive nine weeks exam will be administered.

Each student may be expected to conduct research projects by reading current publications, newspaper
articles related to current trends in the medical field, etc. Each student will be required to present to the
class the information obtained. Each presentation must follow the guidelines set forth by the instructor.
