Lesson #2 title: PART 2 = Plotting INTEGERS on NUMBER LINES
Date:
THROUGH-LINE: Order - discovering
Integers are negative and positive numbers and ‘0’, expressed in temperatures, golf scores, ocean depths, & mountain heights.
OUTCOMES:
1. Place given integers on a number line, and explain how integers are ordered.
2. Extend a given number line by adding numbers less than zero, and explain the pattern on each
side of zero.
3. Draw sketch of an integer number line to solve word problems.
MATERIAL NEEDED: highlighters, pencil, blue pen
Example #1: SCENARIO #1 number line is drawn
Example #2: SCENARIO #2 number line is drawn but not labelled
Match the shape on the number line with its corresponding integer.
a. - 5
b. +10
c. +7
d. +2
e. - 9
f. - 3
Example #3: SCENARIO #3 no number line just question
a) Which three integers are less than -4 and greater than -8?
b) Which integer is between -3 and +1?
a. - 4
b. +2
c. - 1
d. +5
Example #4: (obtained from Math 6 Pilot 2010)
Example #5: Pretend that this number line shows a bike race. If the finish line is represented by ‘0’ label
the positions of each racer:
a) David was 4 metres in front of the finish line.
b) Jesse was 5 metres behind the finish line.
c) Caleb was 3 metres behind the finish line.
d) Joel was 2 metres in front of the finish line.

YOUR TURN 
#1:
#2:
Joe wants to plot -6 and -8 on a number line. Which sentence is true? Draw a number line!
Then read each carefully and cross off incorrect answers.
#3:
Janelle wrote -4 > -6, which is a true statement. Which sentence about the two integers is
also true? Which sentence is true? Draw a number line! Then read each carefully and cross
off incorrect answers.
The integer -4 is to the right of -6 on the number line.
The integer -4 is on the opposite side of 0 as -6 on the number line.
The integer -4 is to the left of -6 on the number line.
The integer -4 is further from 0 than -6 on the number line.
L2(4)
#4: Which number line has all the integers in the correct order?
#5:
#6: Which answer shows the integers in the order from least to greatest?
L2(5)
#7:
#8: Which integer is halfway between +3 and – 5?
a. 2
b. 0
c. - 1
d. - 3
c. - 7
d. +3
#9:
Which integer is between - 5 and -1?
a. +5
L2(3)
b. - 4
L2(6)
#10: (obtained from http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview.cgi?LPid=23402)
True or False? (SUGGESTION: draw and label a number line)
-9 < -10
0 < -5
-6 > -8
7 = -7
12 < 15
-8 > 1
#11: (obtained from Eduguide6 p.20)
