President’s profile Katerina Konaris was born in London but moved to Cyprus in 1980. She is married to Yiotis and has two daughters, Louise a gynecologist in London and Thalia who is working as a Research Assistant at Cambridge University in Engineering for Sustainable Development. Education and Training After graduating from Central Foundation Grammar in London, she studied at City University London where she graduated in 1975 with an Honours degree in Chemistry. Trained in Forensic Science, explosives, arson, drugs, gunshot residue, at the Louisiana State Crime Laboratory under the American Antiterrorist Assistance Program 1988 Trained at the Bundeskriminalamt Germany in Drugs and Arson analysis 1992 Trained at the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Crime Laboratory LA in paints, glass fibre forensic analysis. Is a Forensic Expert under the Cyprus Legislation in the area of Forensic Science. Work experience She was appointed Scientific Officer for the British Civil Service working at the Government Laboratory in London. She was promoted in 1978 to the Victoria and Albert Museum where as a Higher Scientific Officer she was in charge of the Analytical Laboratory for the analysis of ancient relics. In 1982, after moving to Cyprus, she joined the Cyprus State General Laboratory where after working in various sections, became Head of the Forensic Department in 1990, a post she still holds today. Responsibilities and Committees She is also a Forensic Expert for court purposes under the Cyprus Evidence Law. Member of the legislation committee of the Antinarcotic Council Member of the European Drugs Working Group, since 2003 and member of the Quality Assurance Subcommittee in Drug analysis. Secretary of the European Working Group for Fire and Explosion since 2008, Chairperson for the Accelerants Subcommittee 2005-2010 Member of the Forensic International Network of Explosive (FINEX) Working Group Member since 2004. Member of the Subcommittee for the Criteria for the Identification of Explosives. Member of the European Scientific Committee for the EMCDDA 2005-2008. Member of the Risk Assessment of Synthetic Drugs Committee. Presentations and Lectures Has given many presentations and lectures on the advances of Forensic Science and European and International conferences as well as training lectures to the Cyprus Police eg: Analysis of Ignitable Liquids using Charcoal Strip Adsorption/ Headspace SPME GC/MS 2008.
