2006-2007 CARDIOPULMONARY SCIENCE (BS) Intended Program Outcomes 1. Verbal and Non-verbal Communication Skills: Students and graduates will demonstrate proficiency in verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Methods of Assessment and Criteria for Success Direct Measures Indirect Measures 1. Eighty-percent of students will receive a score of seventy percent or higher in verbal and nonverbal communication skills in RET 4618 (Fall 2006). Eighty-five percent of students in RET 4714 (Fall 2006) will demonstrate proficiency in verbal and nonverbal communication skills by receiving a communication skill level rating of at least 3.5 on a 5 point Likert scale. 1. Eighty-five percent of students in RET 4876 (Fall 2006), RET4877 (Spring 2007) RET 3874 (Spring 2007) will demonstrate proficiency in verbal and nonverbal communication by receiving a communication skill level rating of at least 2 on a 3 point Likert scale. CPS faculty will assess verbal and non-verbal communication skills of students during case study and research article reviews through use of evaluation instruments and in RET 4930 and RET 4714 (Fall 2006). Eighty-five percent of graduates will demonstrate proficiency in verbal and nonverbal communication by receiving communication skill level rating of at least 3.5 on a 5 point Likert scale. Clinical Preceptors will assess verbal and non-verbal communication skills of students by using a Clinical Summative Evaluation Survey in RET 4876 (Fall 2006), RET 4877 (Spring 2007) RET 3874 (Spring 2007). Respiratory Care Department supervisors will assess verbal and non-verbal communications skills of graduates using the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) Employer Survey. 2. Written Communication Skills: Students and graduates will demonstrate proficiency in written communication skills. 2. Eighty percent of students will receive a mean score of 70% in assignments assessing written communications skills in RET 4618 (Fall 2006) RET 4876 (Fall 2006) and RET 4294 (Spring 2007). 2. Eighty percent of students in RET 4876 (Fall 2006), RET 3874 (Spring 2007), RET 4877 (Spring 2007) will demonstrate proficiency in written communication by receiving a rating of at least 2 on a 3 point Likert scale. Seventy-five percent of graduates taking the NBRC Certification for Respiratory Therapist (CRT) Examination will achieve a passing score in the area of written communication. Eighty-percent of graduates will demonstrate proficiency in written communication by receiving a rating of at least 3.5 on a 5 point Likert scale. CPS faculty will assess written communication skills of students by using written case studies and other forms of written assignments in RET 4876 (Fall 2006) and RET 4294 (Spring 2007). . Clinical Preceptors will assess written communication skills of students by using a Clinical Summative Evaluation Survey in RET 4876 (Fall 2006), RET 4877 (Spring 2007) RET 3874 (Spring 2007). 3. Critical Thinking Skills: Students and graduates will demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking and problem solving skills. CPS faculty will assess written communication skills of graduates by assessing their scores in the area of written communication on the CRT examination. 2.2b Respiratory Care Department supervisors will assess written communications skills of graduates using the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) Employer Survey. 3. Eighty percent of students will receive a mean score of 70% or better on coursework and assigned learning activities relating to critical thinking. Critical thinking skills of students will be assessed using various course evaluation instruments. Applicable courses include RET 4294 (Spring 2007) and RET 3264 (Summer 2007). 3. Eighty percent of students in RET 4876 (Fall 2006), RET 3874 (Spring 2007), and RET 4877 (Spring 2007), will indicate a critical thinking skill level of at least 2 on a 3 point Likert scale. Seventy-five percent of students in RET 4616 (Spring 2007) taking the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Self Assessment Exam (SAE) Comprehensive Entry-level, Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examination will achieve passing scores in areas of critical thinking. Seventy-five percent of the graduates taking the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Entrylevel Certification, Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examinations will achieve passing sores in areas of critical thinking. Seventy-five (75%) percent of students will receive a score of eighty (80%)-percent or higher in RET 4877 (Spring 2007). 4. Students will be evaluated using a survey of clinical preceptors. Survey results will indicate in the area of specific content knowledge at least 2 or higher on a 3- point Likert scale. In RET 4616 (Spring 2007), seventy-five (75%) percent of students taking the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Self Assessment Exam (SAE) Comprehensive Entrylevel, Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examination will demonstrate knowledge of the specified content. Graduates will be evaluated using a survey of graduate’s immediate supervisor. Faculty of CPS will assess students in the area of specific content knowledge of students by using various course evaluation instruments in selected core RET courses: RET 3264 (summer 2007) will use clinical simulations and exams; RET 4294 (Spring 2007), will use case study presentations; and RET4877 (Spring 2007) will use proficiency checkoffs located in the clinical notebook.. In RET 4616 (Spring 2007), faculty of CPS will assess students in the area of specific content knowledge of students by using National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Self Assessment Exam (SAE) Comprehensive Entry-level, Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examinations. Faculty of CPS will assess specific content knowledge of students by using National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Entry-level Certification, Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examinations. Clinical Preceptors will assess specific content knowledge of students by using a Clinical Summative Evaluation Survey. Graduate’s immediate Respiratory Care Supervisor will assess specific content knowledge of graduates by using the CoARC Employer Survey. 5. Professional Behavior : Students and graduates will demonstrate knowledge of professional standards, values, attitudes, and behavior consistent with the American Association for Respiratory Care Guidelines for Professionalism. 6. At the end of each course and the CPS program of study, students will demonstrate comprehensive retention of theoretical, technical, and clinical knowledge and skills exemplified by an entry-level respiratory therapist. 7. Seventy-five percent of the 2006 and 2007 class of students will demonstrate comprehensive retention of theoretical, technical, and clinical knowledge and skills exemplified by an entry-level respiratory therapist. Ninty percent of students will retain theoretical, technical, and clinical knowledge as determined by obtaining passing grades for RET 4618, RET 4714 (2006 class), RET 4294, RET 3264, and RET 4616, RET 3418 (Spring 2007 class). A number of courses were repeated by 3-6 students (2007 class) one or more times because of failing grades (RET3264, RET 3483, RET 3418L, RET 3485, RET 4930. Retention of clinical knowledge and performance will be measured using evaluations by clinical preceptors for RET3874 and RET 4877 (2007 class) Ninety-five percent (95%) of clinical preceptors and employers surveyed will rate 95% of students and graduates as having demonstrated adequate knowledge about professional standards, values, attitudes and behavior consistent with that of the profession. 7. Comprehension retention of students and graduates will be evaluated using a survey of preceptors and employers. Retention of theoretical, technical, and clinical knowledge will be measured using National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) Comprehensive Entry-level, Comprehensive Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examinations. Retention of theoretical, technical, and clinical knowledge will be measured using National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Entry-level Certification , Written Registry, and Clinical Simulation examinations
