1.4.4 Environmental Friendly Technologies
One of the most important problems of modern technology is the control and the
efficient prevention of environmental pollution, i.e. the pollution of the soil,
the water and the atmosphere.
The Institute of Physical Chemistry specializes in the design of environmental
friendly technologies with specific research projects on a) membrane
technologies for absorption of atmospheric pollutants,
b) study of the atmospheric pollution,
c) isotope hydrology for the contamination of underground and surface water,
d) green chemistry, e) study of semiconducting surfaces for pollutant
decomposition and f) photocatalytic decomposition of organic and inorganic
pollutants.
1.4.4 Environmental Friendly Technologies
Modern technology has created materials which contain characteristics at
the nanoscale and which find extensive applications in industry and
biotechnology.
The Institute of Physical Chemistry performs extensive research activity
in nanostructured materilas organic (polymers and dendrimers) and
inorganic manoparticle materials. The aims of this research is the design,
modelling, synthesis, characterisation of these materials and their use
for industrial applications. Some of the curretly conducted research projects
are a) liposomes and dendrimers as drug delivery systems, b) liquid crytals,
c) dendrimers for water purification d) polymeric membranes for gas
separation technologies e) nanoporous materials and f) nanostructured
surfaces and materials for photocatalytic, photovoltaic and bioanalytic
applications.
