Basic Trigonometry in England
Basic Trigonometry in National curriculum
1. Reason mathematically
Extend and formalise their knowledge of ratio and proportion, including trigonometric ratio, in
working with measures and geometry, and in working with proportional relations algebraically and
graphically
2. Content- ratio, proportion and rates of change
Compare lengths, areas and volumes using ratio notation and/or scale factors; make links to
similarity (including trigonometric ratios)
3. Content- Geometry and measures
Apply Pythagoras’ Theorem and trigonometric ratios to find angels and lengths in right-angled
triangles {and, where possible, general triangles} in two {and three} dimensional figures
Know the exact values of sin πœƒ and cos πœƒ for πœƒ = 0°, 30°, 45° , 60° π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ 90°; know the exact value of
tan πœƒ for πœƒ = 0°, 30°, 45° π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ 60°
Edexcel
Requirements
For both tiers’ knowledge, skills and understanding
Content – ratio, proportion and rates of change:
Content – geometry and measures – mensuration and calculation
Examples
Baseline test1:
This question is listed at Test C. The questions in Test C are set at old NC levels 6–8, with
just over half the marks at level 7, and at Pearson progression steps 5th–9th.

Three GCSE Baseline tests are intended to be taken by your students at the end of KS3,
and will help you to understand the progress your students have made to date, and to assess
your students’ learning needs before your start teaching the new GCSE Maths.
