Melaleuca Treatment Decision Tree for Homeowners You should suppress melaleuca if the cost of eradication is prohibitive or if you have large numbers (acres) of trees. Start Do you want to… You should kill melaleuca if the trees are few in number, the trees are near your home, or your property borders on a natural area. Treatment result selection phase Suppress melaleuca on your property? Kill melaleuca on your property? Remove the trees? Grind or chip the trees? Preferred option but can be expensive. Leave the trees? Not recommended for populated areas or near homes and buildings. Cut down the trees? Hack & squirt Use heavy machinery Use hand tools Use heavy machinery Large machines such as the Barko chipper and Brontosaurus are best used on large tracts with easy access. Best for large tracts (acres of trees). Use a lawn mower, brush mower, etc. Use hand tools Cut the trees down with a chainsaw or machete. When trees become stressed (by chopping them down, or burning, or hurricanes, etc.) they drop large quantities of seeds. If left untreated, this could create a problem greater than when you started.
